EVAP valve error code woes! HELP HELP HELP!

Hey, everybody. I've got a 1998 SE auto with 140,000 or so miles on it. It's non-California emissions, I assume.

Recently, the "check engine" light has been coming on, with two error codes:

0705 - EVAP system leak

and

0309 - EVAP canister vent control valve open

So what's going on? This basically points me to the EVAP system, but
which is the canister vent control valve? Is it the canister purge valve?

Based on the way the EVAP system works, I think replacing the gas cap might be a good first step. Any other thoughts? HELP HELP HELP!

on edit: I'd search the forum, but the search is on vacation, so I'm depending on you guys!

sounds like the evap canister valve seized. It happened to me. It's located somewhere behind the driver's side rear wheel. Look under where the mudflap should be. it's under there. You can try and clean it or replace it.

Is there just one valve in that area? I've looked under the flap, but I was a bit perplexed. If I pull off a valve, does that mean I've got the right one?

Did you clean the valve? How? Was it successful? Roughly how much $$$ is a new one?

Thanks!

it was all under warranty. so they replaced it all. all i know is that i had the same codes. The good thing is that the evap system won't affect performance of the vehicle. But the check engine light is annyoing.
