I am looking at getting new tires for the Maxima SE rims. I am thinking of getting the Dunlop 5000 Z rated all season performance tires. What tire size should I get?

225/50/16!! If you can find them. That size runs a little more than 235/45/17.

SP5000

Just put on a set of SP5000s today. P225/55r16. I actually tried the 50 series and thought it looked stupid - too much gap in the wheel well. Not an issue if you're going to lower it or something - I have no such plans. I noticed the turn in was slightly (and I mean slightly) less sharp with the higher profile tires (we're only talking 0.22" higher). You'll get that with a taller tire. Might be able to sharpen it up a bit by moving the RSB forward a little. Otherwise it was difficult to make any other judgements on the tire - it's been pouring here all day.

Other differences - a softer ride, and you've effectively raised your final drive ratio from 3.82 to 3.76 resulting in 70 or so less RPM down the highway. Some say this will cause the car to be slower off the line - I say it's unnoticable, or at the very least splitting hairs.

I do concur! the Dunlop 5000's are a great tire whether it's wet or dry (don't know how they are in the snow). I also agree that the 50 series is going to show MORE fender gap than we already have with the stock springs. I have 225/55/16.

Also, I ordered mine from Tirerack (around $90 each)and had the local Nissan dealer install and balance them ($60).
Good luck

Any thoughts on a 205/55ZR15? I like the tire and think it would do just fine with spacing and all. Even though my car is lowered...it should work okay.

Opinions....????

On a 15" wheel, if your rim width is 7", the right size would be 225/60 15 to maintain the stock diameter.

bridgestones...

well i just got new tires and rims...225/55/16 and borbet type e's. really good combination. anyway, i think if you need another option for tires, go with the Bridgestone Potenza RE730s. they're a really great tire, check out the user ratings for them at tirerack.com. all 8's at least, and a 9 for dry traction. so if you don't have a snow problem, try going with those tires. they also have the coolest looking tread design ive seen!

(all of the users who reviewed this tire bascially have audi's and BMW M3s and stuff...so you can get a good perspective on how well the tire does with sports cars)

doesnt a tire size of 225/55/16 change the overall diameter of the tire, and affect the odometer readings? ive read that to correctly plus size, our tire size for 16' se rims should be 225/50/16.

I put the Yokahama AVS 245-45-16 on my SE 16 inch
rims and love the way they handle. Of course, anything
was an improvement over the stock Toyo's...

BTW, it sure was fun watching the guys at Discount
Tire put the tires on! It only took them an hour
or so...

BB :-)

It does but just a little, you won't even notice it.

Tire Size

In fact the difference in height going from 215/55r16 to 225/55r16 is less than going from 215/55r16 to 225/50r16.

P225/50r16 vs P215/55r16
Sidewall height: -0.23"
Overall height: -0.45"
Circumference: -1.42"

P225/55r16 vs P215/55r16
Sidewall height: +0.22"
Overall height: +0.43"
Circumference: +1.36"

The overall height on the 55 is slightly higher but that's just splitting hairs.

It looks a hell of a lot better too.

Also..

The degree of speedometer error going to the 50 series is higher:

P215/55r16 to P225/50r16 at 55 mph will now read 56 mph.

P215/55r16 to P225/55r16 at 55 mph will now read 54.07 mph.

Difference at approx. 80 mph in rpm (5spd) 3.82 rear end:

P215/55r16 to P225/50r16 3200 rpm is now 3258 rpm, 58 more

P215/55r16 to P225/55r16 3200 rpm is now 3146 rpm, 54 less
