I'm an SCCOA member, But
I am an SCCOA member with a '91 Automatic Thunderbird Super Coupe. I am not here to trash the Maxima, in fact I have driven three different Maxima's that my parents have owned/own. The first was a '96 GXE, the second was a 2000 GLE, and for the third they went back to a GLE because they didn't like leather. All 3 were automatics. My SC is also an automatic. I'm sure you guys will argue with me but my car is far faster from a dead stop and that blower keeps the car running as long as I don't back off. After 95 mph, you may be able to beat an automatic SC. In terms of handling and braking, the Maxima could probably win as long as we weren't going really fast. A rear wheel drive car is much more comfortable past the point where the tires let go. I've had my '91 into 4-wheel slides and it is controllable.
From a moving start, a 5-speed Maxima may be able to pull on the SC for a second unless you were in one of the speed ranges where the SC pulls hard. A word to the wise. Don't race an SC if you are between about 65 and 90 mph. Even if it's an auto, he can kick the overdrive out and the car is unreal at that speed. It will literally snap you neck and pin you in your seat.
My '91 is not stock by the way and my parent's maximas all were. But stock, my car was faster too. I have a full exhaust with a straight through resonator and no rear mufflers. I also have a K&N and a badder than stock blower.
I'm right outside of Daytona and if someone wants to think about meeting a few SC owners, and see that we're not all trash talkers and even some of us who are, aren't that bad either.
I'm not saying your cars are fast as hell or slow as hell either. For what it is, it's a quick car.
By the way, does anyone else think the 4th Gen maxima auto feels quicker than the 2000+?

Nice to see you, sckid...
Yeah, those SC'd T-Birds are rare and pretty sweet. I'd take one over the V8. I liked the ones in black and grey. IMHO, your T-Bird is almost like a rwd GTP. They both have around 240hp stock, right? That's pretty cool.
I dunno about the auto versions, but the 5sp 4th gen(early models like 95-96) are just a bit faster than the new 5th gen. I suspect the same might be true with the autos too.

Re: I'm an SCCOA member, But
The 5spd 2k Maxima will take a SC Tbird all the way to top speed per the specs I found. Auto 2ks are geared for luxury not performance and there over 1 sec slower.
Specs T-Bird: 15.2 at 88 mph 7.0 0-60
Specs 2k Maxima 5spd: 15.1 at 92 mph 0-60 6.7 sec
Specs 95-99 Maxima 5spd: 15.2 at 88 mph 0-60 6.6 sec
Hmmmmmm Pretty obviously which car is faster.

4th gen autos vs 5th gen autos stock for stock same results. I proved this at the Dallas meet for our first MAXUS and won the bet.

Yes, they are comparable in horsepower but the Thunderbird SC has loads more torque. That is why I said that the SC would win a standing stop start race. It's torque gets that 4000 lb. car out of the hole like a bat out of hell, that's of course if they get traction which is marginal on dry pavement and damn near non-existant on damp or icy pavement. The car will literally spin them at 10% throttle on wet roads.
I fell in love with the SC's looks personally. Before I drove it, I would have rather had a 96 or 97 4.6 liter in black, white, or blue with the sport package. Then, one day, I fell in love with a '91 SC after giving up my borrowed '96 Maxima. (although I'm one of the few people who would probably consider thier parent's car borrowed). The '96 was a nice car but was getting high in miles, in fact the '91 SC I have has less miles than the '96 Max did. I have just 81,000 original miles and only 45K on the '95 engine and about 2,500 on a new transmission.
I personally have just always loved what the rear wheel drives could do over the front wheel drive cars. No one will argue with me that rear wheel drive cars will do badder donuts and tail slides than a front wheel drive and can get into some pretty bad 4-wheel slides with sufficient power. The Maxima would do smokey donuts, but they were big circles. The SC can get them going in a much smaller area and with way more smoke.
I will say that the Maxima is a very smooth highway cruiser, as is the SC. The Maxima and SC are both leaders in their class in power, luxury, and refinement.
When I got the SC by the way, I was looking for a low miler 4th Gen Maxima or a low mile Thunderbird V8 or SC. Never thought I'd find the SC. By the way, if you want to see pictures, http://www.carinfosource.com/SC5.jpg or http://www.carinfosource.com/SCEngine.jpg although the car picture is before the exhaust and clear corners and the Engine picture is with the old radiator, plug wires, and cleaning.
If you guys ever have any meets in Florida, I'll bring my SC by if you'll let me and you can check it out.

Re: Thanks 95MaxSE5S
A auto max of any year vs your SC will loose. But a 5spd against your car it will be a tight battle but the MAX should win if the driver is good. So what if you have MORE TQ, advatage is weigh for the MAXIMA, its much lighter than your SC. A 3250 LB car MAX compared to your 4000lb car....ugg big difference.

Come on man, there's nothing I hate more when someone tries to voice their opinion on this board and is smashed to bits. I agree with your opinion on the car, but don't dog someone elses ride especially when it's unprovoked. Let a person like and think what he wants, then if the insults start fly'in, pull out the big guns. But until then let's not turn this thread into the the one about the SC (00' Camaro vs. Maxima) and the Max. Gives me bad vibes. Just my 2 cents. No hard feelings to anyone.

nice cars! nice people?
I hate it when one person gives a car a bad image -
I like the Maxima, just like Adam .. but damn people I bought my car for a reason .. I like the way it looks, handles, performs, etc... why would you knock someone unprovoked like that?
Makes people wonder about the owner, not the car.
Stock time differences of one tenth of a second in the quarter and two tenths in 0-60 make me think that the winner would be the better driver, as it is with any close match up ...
Love the site people, nice board system, and a lot of cool people from what I've been reading ... keep up the good work and good rides!

Okay, I didn't come to cause trouble. I came in part because I have a couple of nissans in the family including 2001 Maxima. Just did the spoiler and wood dash on it. It out brakes my car. It is more nimble than my car. The ride is smoother than my car. I like the look of my car and the Maxima. I had a Maxima before my SC. The SC by the way is faster than a V8. Most of us can't launch our SC's as fast as we'd like which I will admit is the same with the Maxima's, but worse with us. If I didn't live in Florida, I wouldn't have bought the SC. I would rather have a Maxima in the snow. The Maxima could take off better on black ice than I can in the rain, so that's not a point I'm arguing.
Like the Maxima, the actual number have been lower. Members have pulled 14.5's and lower from a bone stock car. Every SC seems to be a different animal. Some with mods barely break under 15, some are 13 second cars with basic mods.
Yes, it is a Ford and Fords do tend to cost more to own than a Japanese car. I have put a new transmission in my car among other things such as the starter and radiator.
My car isn't stock and hasn't been since I got it, so maybe mine is faster and maybe you guys are right, but I don't think I'm the fastest SC around, far from it. There are 12 second SC's. I ran my mid-6 0-60 in a bad traction situation and with 400 lbs of tools in my trunk (too much of a pain to take out, they're there all the time). No jokes on the tools being because I need to work on the SC all the time, that's not why they're there.
Taste is an interesting thing. No two people like exactly the same thing the same amount. I like my SC but there are days when I wish I bought the max. I paid a little more for my SC because they are hard to find and it had a badder than stock engine and blower in it and was owned by a mechanic. I did not expect to put another 4 grand in parts into it and another 2K to go to get it flawless. It is a 14 second car. Where in the 14's is the only question.
I burned the wheels off a Celica GT-S and stock to stock our numbers say it should have been a close race. I also beat a modified Mustang GT 5-speed so for those of you who say you can beat a 5.0, that doesn't mean you'd beat me.
I do really like the Maxima though. The '96 was the last year with the cornering light without a re-wire, that's something I really liked. I did like the '96 transmission a lot more than the new one though. The luxury geared transmission in the 2001 just doesn't do it for me. The '96 would honestly burn rubber at 45 mph and take off then chirp it's shift.
If I had it to do over, I'd probably look equally for a Maxima and an SC but it may come out the same. My favorite color on the Maxima by the way is sterling mist.

To THESCKID, ignore the ignorant posts. You're pretty cool. Between these cars, I'd say the better driver wins since both cars are prety equal. I raced my brother's Mark VIII, which has more power than the SC. He beat me once, I beat him once. Whoever gets the jump on the other guy wins--simple as that. SCs are cool--I considered buying one too, but just couldn't find one (and got scared away by Ford horror stories).

I was drawn here as Adam was from a post on Sccoa ,and I have to admit ,I'm a bit ashamed to call myself an SC'er at this moment. Not all of us despise Maximas , and the trash talk is unfortunate to say the least .Arrogant people are in every walk of life ,including car clubs. Maybe it's because i'm a bit older (43) but I just don't get why people have to get so mean-spirited for no reason (except to build themself up ) and put down others cars . If you don't like a certain car ,so be it-don't buy it . There's something for everyone out there. My '89 Sc is the best car I've ever owned ,and i can't imagine selling it . Is it the best car ever made ? NO...Is it faster than a speeding bullit? No...It's got it's faults (still has original HG and motor never apart at 170k !) ,but it IS unique .It';s a blast to drive ,but so are a lot of cars .But it's old tech now ,things move on . You can't really compare a car that's not made anymore with a car that's on the cutting edge of engineering technology .I think the Maxima SE is one of the nicer looking cars out there ,and ,although i'm not a front wheel drive guy ,i'd not mind owning one . Yup ,they are snappy ,and i don't doubt many of you have beaten some sc's. You guys sound like we do ,YOU LOVE YOUR CARS! I lost a best friend this year ,so i'd rather make friends than enemies . Thanks Dan, we're here for the same reason
Dan is a little more humble that I am I'll admit. I like the SC better than any car I've driven, but personal opinion is just that, the opinion of one person. I am also a little ashamed that one of our own went out and bashed you in your own "home".
I'm sure Dan (sorry for speaking for you Dan) and I and several other SC owners in Central/Northeastern Florida would consider meeting with a few nice Maxima owners.
As I said in another post, I would like to see a meet of Maxima's and SC's. We both have something unique. A powerful, luxurious, well refined highway cruiser. We may have highlights in different areas. Our SC's have more torque and horsepower but you guys win out in weight, handling, and braking despite our 4-wheel disks and Sophisticated Adjustable Ride control and Independent rear supension. Both cars are very comfortable to drive and both are quick for their size and weight (although I admit the Maxima weighs substantially less than the SC). Both cars can eat up almost every car in it's class, if not every and then some. Both can get smoke pouring out of the wheel wells. Both cars look sleek and modern. These again our my opinions and I would appreciate it if no one came back with a comment like "The SC doesn't look modern" or something like that. I personally think the ground effects and well matched wheel combination combined with the long, wide, and low look of the car make it look like it could be on Ford's showroom today. People are often surprised when I say my car is a '91. They think it is a '97 or something. Those of course are the people who do not know the SC. Those who know it know they were only made in limited numbers from '89 to '95 and most of us can pick out the '89-93 from the '94/5 and many of us can point out a '93 and some can even define the years further from 50 feet away. I am one who can, but I do get fooled occassionally. Like many of you, we love our cars and love to modify them. Some 89's sport '95 wheels making me think it's a '93. Anyway, this isn't really important but all I'm saying is that we're just like you guys in a way. We take great pride in our cars. Whether it's an advanced high-revving dual overhead cam 3.0L V6 or a roots-type super charger sitting atop a 232 cubic inch Overhead valve 3.8L V6, both of our cars do what they do well.
By the way, many of your modified Maxima's running deep into the 14's can beat some of our SC's. Some of our SC's can beat your Maxima's. We can't sit here and argue about whose car is faster. The truth is they are close. We can argue all day but it comes right down to the case by case. My car even though it's an auto, is reasonably far from stock and could probably smoke many of you. I would, however, may be someday walked all over by a Maxima. It probably won't be a stock one, but I think a Maxima with a power adder (IE: Supercharger, NOS, or Turbo) could take me. No, I'm not saying you guys need these to be fast. I have never seen a Max with a chip, maybe they respond well. You wouldn't think our SC would be significantly faster with $120 worth of parts, would you? Well, buy a blower pulley and an aftermarket resonator and you'd be surprised.
Bottom line, I came to your home site to help right a wrong and check out some of your modded maxes. I also thought i'd get some ideas for another car in my family, a 2001 maxima.

oh my god!!!
tmoutlaw kid does this EVERY TIME!!!
Guys don't listen to him, he's just talkin' ****, giving SC's and Maximas a bad name!
He did the same thing when I started a post about getting creamed on the freeway by a SC'd Camry.
Anyways, I think the T-birds are a good choice for the class that they're in and the price, if somewhat large.
But...
performance-wise, I think the SC is pretty damn close to the Max, no matter how much torque or HP. Here's a quote from the SCCOA FAQ:
A stock Max will run 15's all day, auto or 5spd!
Thanks for visiting guys, don't let a punk's comment here & there ruin your stay!

What were stock quarter mile times for my SC when it was new?
Automatic trans. cars typically ran a 15.7 to 16.0 at 88 mph.
Manual trans. cars typically ran a 15.4 to 15.7 at 89 mph.
Times varied upon ambient temperature, wind, tires, driver skill and how hard the car was driven. A cool day really is beneficial to these cars.

You guys are making me tear up all ova, just kidding. I like to see you guys come here and not try to build up your car and put ours down. While it is true that I think my car is better than yours, I'm sure you think the same about your car. We all take pride in our rides and should, unless it's a GEO or YUGO. But what i'm tryin to say is that it's nice to see you SC guys in here showin respect, and I think the very least we can do as enjoyers of the Maxima is return the favor and respect you and your opinions. After all this is our house, and you, the guest.

Just wanted to add the Administrator's note....
You guys are more than welcome to hop over here and look around anytime you'd like, and I know that the offer would probably be the same the other way. We need some reality to keep ourselves in check from time to time, so it's nice to have cross-group interaction. Heck, we might even glean some new info from one another -- fathom that.
At any rate, please don't get frustrated by some of the more hostile posts. Not everyone knows how to behave here. Just "Enjoy the Ride" as we Nissan lovers say and welcome to the site.

Re: Just wanted to add the Administrator's note....
Thanks Jambo. I frequently hop page to page to look for new custom ideas for my Super Coupe, I don't want to be like everyone else. I suggest that anyone else like me does the same. It is a great way to come up with new ideas. You never know when you might realize that their spoilers fit your car or that rewiring your foglights to work independently from your headlights would be cool (I got that one of mustangworld.com). Either way, I have owned both a Mustang and Maxima in addition to my current car, the Super Coupe, so that's another reason why I frequent those pages.
It is nice to see that you guys welcome us over, and although I obviously cannot speak for the entire group, not because they dont necessarily agree but because I haven't discussed it with them, I am sure SCCOA.com would welcome all of you to come over as long as you don't come to trash our cars.
I can't appologize for the actions of one of our members in coming into your home to bash you guys, but I can say that I came with good intentions and will never come into your own home and trash talk.
I hope my posts have righted some wrongs or if nothing else, seen that we have a lot of decent members at SCCOA and that, as another poster said, you can't let the actions of one individual tarnish the name of a car.
Have a good week and weekend, and stay "Driven."
