Grease leaking from front driver side area...need advise plz

couple of days ago, i noticed a lot of grease on front driver side wheel. doing quick visual check, looks like that rubber boot (closest to the wheel) had torn. is this expensive to fix? and should i replace both sides although the passenger side is broken? does anyone have experience with this? if so, please offer some insights. thx.

You've got a bad cv joint.
It should cost between $150-$175 or so.
Get the whole axle replaced. The boot replacement won't
quite cut it. I just swapped both of mine.

cv joint is bad?? not just the boot? i don't hear/feel any grinding noise when turning. normally, when the cv joint is bad, u hear/feel a grinding noise and a vibration, right?\

Once you start hearing the noise, the joint's already
on the way out.
Do some research online, but most people will recommend the
whole axle being replaced. To just replace the boot, you're using
a split boot, which is held together by adhesive, where the refurbished axles have one-piece boots.
If you're not selling the car soon, get the whole axle.
My $.02.

It *should* be easy...
To do the driver's side, you might have to pop out the passenger
side too. Since the passenger side is longer, there's a support bearing connecting it to the frame half way down. There's 3 12mm bolts that aren't to easy to get to if you have a stock ypipe. I stripped one out so I gave up.

Good luck.

I've changed my driver's side twice now, and never had to remove the passenger side, except when it went bad.

yep - Marti is the BEST customer service I've ever talked to.

I called him and asked him what the inside of the axle looke like that I sent back, and he sent me back a Powerpoint Presentation with pictures and diagrams of how my axle appeared to have gone bad.

(Sprint Springs = too low, Seattle Streets = too harsh)
