Pondering production of a full header for 4th gens...

ive been thinking for a while about making a full header for maximas, yes this means from the heads down. i know ill probably make one for myself just for ***** and giggles but i was wondering what the interest in this product would be? it would end up being quasi-equal length and some big gains could be seen throughout the RPM range. they would come in two models to start with, a heavy 3/8 inch flange leading to all 1 1/2 primaries to a 1 3/4 tube that end up being overall equal in length for both sets of cylinders, to a 2 1/2 inch tube to a 3 inch flex section back down to a 2 1/2 inch tube thus making the system a 6 - 2 - 1 header. it would probably also be a two piece. the second option would be a 6 - 2 setup and would run longer tubes with less junctions from each set of primaries to dual 2 in flex sections then to a modified cat... also i will be making a full dual exhaust setup for my own car that will resemble what comes stock on a 95+ M3 but it will only come out on one side of the rear. as far as full exhausts and mufflers there would be many choices. id also be able to do full installs. also ill be making for my own car a set of Delrin control arm bushings for everything. which may feasibly eliminate wheel hop, my worst enemy... please let me know if your interested and what youd pay for items like these, they would all be mig welded in mild steal, ceramic coating would also be optional at an additional cost. thanks for your time and i appologize about the lengthy post - pete

do it!

I'll pay up to 600 for a quality set of mandrel bent tubular headers that actually make power.

Yes, I know I have a 2k2, but they bolt on

2k2 would require a different setup to benefit, the larger displacement would greatly change the effectiveness of the header, it would take 30 hours to prototype the header and about 9 hours assembly time once i have a jig setup, the price would have to be over 600 for me to even consider doing a production setup...

MaxSE98: What about the many of us who already have Y-pipes? Would you consider shorty headers? Becuase replacing the whole thing would be a huge waste of money for us. If they (shorty) give decent gains and the prices are cheap (aluminized/ceremic coating), I'd proly be down. The only thing is installation is going to be a bear of a price.

I bet they'd make the car sound sweet though. If Cattman comments on it, you know it's gotta be good.

EDIT: Shorty headers are known not to do much on N/A Maxima's, but what about us boosted Maxima's? Wouldn't that change the whole scenerio as far as gains?

the amount of work involved in rebuilding the exhaust from the heads down would not be worth the minimal gains of the
'shorties' the potential giant increase in power would be from the longer tubes from each cylinder, if you know anything about V8 cars think about the difference between shorty block huggers and long tube headers, in some cases without changing anything else you can get 45 horse out of them, granted thats on a motor almost twice the displacement of the maximas, but its also a pushrod 16 valve essentially, the VQ pushes alot more air through its current setup then most stock v8's. the inherent problem with aftermarket y-pipes available is that they are produced in mass quantitys to make the big dollar. thus shortcuts are taken to make the most profitable product that will sell the best. thats why we have y-pipes and everyone else has headers in the first place. im not looking to get into that niche, i may be choosing the wrong car for this project... the niche im looking for is the guys that have to be faster than everyone else the guys who will spend the extra dollar to be the fastest, hopefully in the process ill be able to provide a massive gain in power. if the gains arent considerable i wouldnt even try to market it. these will all be hand made by my own two hands itll be something i believe in and it will something ill back for a lifetime - pete

this would be months away if u cant wait go get a y its still speculation. i took my stock ypipe and made a few small mods to it and im still faster than maximas that ive raced with any other ypipes and im also running taller than stock tires

any power gains seen in an increase in exhaust flow in an na setup would be exponential in a forced induction setup

If money for production is an issue, you should prototype it yourself (for ***** and giggles-as you said), see if it's worth mass-producing, patent it, and have a bigger comp make them and split the profits. Granted, there may not be that much of a demand for them, either because the maxima-only market is smaller, and the fact that a lot of people would rather see something cheaper than well made, but you might be able to work it out so that they're made to order. Either way, you get paid for developing them.

Because they suck. For whatever reason, they didn't give any more gains than the Y pipe, but they sure as heck are harder to install.

the only problem with this is that, in order to get as much power out as possible it would have to be extremely custom, IE: something a factory wouldnt want to produce because of costs

without getting a closer look i cant really go into much detail, but one huge thing is that the primaries ill be using will be much longer and will join at custom made sculpted union not a collector like the header seen in the picture. this while not greatly increasing velocity will help scavanging effect in each primary. helping remove exhaust gases in each cylinder. the only advantage to that header is that it is pretty but if thats your priority then dont even bother with my "product"

True words of wisdom

Provided good results better than just y-pipe+ i'll be likely to pick up a set from you as well.

I want a set of headers. I have also been holding out on a y-pipe just in case someone like this came along with headers.
