emission on budget y-pipe
The Y-pipe replaces the pre-cats, but the main cat is still adequate to pass a simple "tailpipe sniffer" emissions test. Just drive around for at least 45 minutes before the test to make sure the main cat is nice and hot.
If your test involves a visual inspection, you can hope that the presence of the main cat will be good enough. If not, you may need to put the OEM pipe back on for the test.

I know an aftermarket y-pipe will not let you pass emissions here in NY. I tried everything from warming the car up and driving it around for an hour with 93. I have found that the only way to pass is, unfortunately, paying someone to pass it, even though the manufacturers and many people from this board told me it would pass (I'm not knocking on anyone, you guys give GREAT advice, my situation probably just differed from yours). If your friends with a mechanic or someone similar, ask them if they can recommend you to a friend of theirs that does inspections. I failed twice AND got an $85 ticket before I bit the bullet and had someone pass it. Hope this helps any.
i too live in NY. who gave you the $85 ticket?
