Trip to the MUFFLER shop today

OK, I went in today, to see how much a YPipe would be to install on my maxima is this was my next planned upgrade. The guy there (who owns a '91 Eclipse Turbo, all wheel drive w/ 265hp dynoed after mods) said that would be an ok upgrade, but definately not worth the money. He told me a MUCH better thing to do, even though he "couldn't install" it for me b/c of the 10,000$ fine he would get. He said he could make me a "test" pipe to replace the cat conv. and that it would give me a TON better gain. He said that once a year though, obviously when I go for my VET (vehicle emissions testing) that I would have to put the old one on or it would fail every time. He said it would take 15 minutes to switch them. He said it wouldnt do the bees in a can, but it would maybe make it a little deeper, not too great of a noise difference. What do you all think? oh, btw, he said it would be about 75$ and that he would kinda have to do it "after hours" so that it wouldn't be attached to his business... so he couldn't get busted for the 10,000$ fine hehehe

Yes and there are more black build up one the tail pipe. My Stillen polished tip is all black now. Nothing some sandpaper and buffing wheel won't fix =)

I did that for fifty bux....I put a 'reson8tor' (glasspack) in it's place. And well...it had given me a little more deep sound and power. But the y-pipe is the most restrictive part of the exhasut and doing the y-pipe would gain u more....do both and see what happens....I have my y-pipe almost in the mail from maximadanBut really try and get him down to ~ fifty bux or so. To tell u the truth between my custom cat back exhaust w/ Stillen muffler and my intake.this mod has given me the most power gain..maybe it compliments thses other 2 mods to their fullest and i don't have any emmissions testing here so it's all good. Get the y-pipe too, stock y-pipe is alot more restrictive than the stock 'cat'.The stock y-pipe has pre cats and those are very restrictive and also the stock diamter is smaller than the stillen or cattman pipe. Put a glass pack somewhere or else b/c it may be rather loud. I also notice a lot more black residue buildup near where the talipipe exits. No check engine lights or non-o-dat hapend. just my opinion.

I've personally seen dyno's for our car's with and without the cat and the gains are negligible. The gain from the Y pipe (along with the intake) are at least 10-15 gain on the dyno. The Y pipe does eliminate two pre-cats which are used during cold starts.
