intermediate Coolant leak very odd? Long but please help

I wrote awhile back about having a coolant leak and asked for suggestions of how to find it, because for some reason i couldn't located it. Since then i've noticed something very strange... Here goes... Well the first time i noticed the coolant leak since i didn't have time to check where it was i just added coolant and went on with my day. The next more there was a puddle of coolant under my car. I still didn't have time to check it so i filled it up once again. Now the odd part. This time the next morning there was no puddle. So i opened my hood, and all the coolant was there in the container. Keep in mind i drove for about 2 hours in the car since the last time the coolant leaked. And the first time the coolant leaked i didn't drive anywhere i just left it parked over night. So I drove around for a week and a half, and there was no coolant leak. Then 2 days ago my roomate was getting in his car when i was getting in mine, and he pointed out the fact that i had another puddle of coolant under my car (i know this is great for the envirnoment). I was in a rush so went to work anyway, and on the way home i noticed my car was getting way past half way on the temp scale (and it NEVER does that). So i got home threw more coolant in and here i am today confused. How can a coolant leak happen only sometimes? Is there a valve that opens and closes only when the engine needs coolant? If so where is it cause that must be the sorce of the leak. I've tried looking under the car but i can't find the leak, and since it doesn't happen right away its REALLY hard to tell where its coming from. Anyone have any suggestions. I refuse to pay a mechanic to fix a problem this simple and get charged $100 bucks just for the diagnosis and probably $100 more for parts and labor. So Help!!!!

I don't have a clue, but you might want to take soome time out and get it looked at before you run into some for serious problems should your engine overheat.....just my .2 cents
