1995 Electrical Problems

I've been having some electrical problems over the past 8 months. I've even had it into a service centre and they could not find anything wrong.

Symptoms are: periodic (once a week), small wisp of smoke from the steering column and slight burning insulation smell, and the turn signal fuse blows frequently (once a month), also, the air conditioner has stopped working (might be related). All other fusses, links and relays are fine. Anyone else experience this?

I have removed most of the dash around the steering column but cannot get close to the problem unless I remove the wheel, and with the air bag in there, I want to avoid any of that.

Any advice/ info on similar experience is much appreciated.

I've got a 95 GXE.
I've been getting the 'notchy' feeling too.
How long after you felt the changer go funny, did you see the smoke??

Thanks for the info NISMO!

I did not really take note of the notchiness as related to the smoke. If I were to guess, probably 3 months or so, but when the smoke starts, it might be once a week for 3 months, then 2wice a week, for a month, then you start blowing fuses, and so on.

I went to a wreckers and took the turn signal mechanism off an Altima I believe (same switch), and just replaced the plastic back of my original housing (the one that was burnt up).

No smoke for a couple of months now and still counting No notchiness either.

Good luck
