i have a leak on my 5 speed tranny.Its leaking where the 2 little bolts are on the opposite side of where you drain the gear fluid. Is this the differential bearing problem with the 95-97's or someother tranny leak?any help would be greatly appreciated.

drive axel seal is leaking... if u don't hear a whining in 1st and 2nd gear, u will soon enough! (if it is diffy bearings)

 

What's the fix or do you have to pull tranny and fix the seal. Might as well just add fluid until need a clutch...

 

is it cheaper to get a new 5 speed tranny or fix the problem which seems like it gets worse? now the drive axel seal is leaking ,next the bearings.... wtf ... you know. what do you suggest?

 

yeah, i definately have this problem. In my case, I have been able to drive 10,000 miles with the problem in the transmission, but now it is almost dead. Total, the transmission has 150,000 miles. It makes a bunch of weird noises. I will be getting mine replaced within the next 2 weeks. The cheapest option is to replace your transmission.

Here are some symptoms (from my experience):
- leaking around drive axel seal
- initially 1st and 2nd will start to produce a whining sound, then as time goes by so will 3rd, 4th, and 5th.
- The shifter might start to rattle at 50+ MPH. This happens because bad differential bearings cause excessive vibrations in the drive axel. This also leads to mis-alignment.

I recommend you replace your clutch too. If you are riding stock clutch right now, get an Exedy Stage 1 Performance clutch. There's a group deal going on right now... $225 up till April 24th. Get your flywheel re-surfaced too... that's about 20 bucks.

I have the same problem.... im getting a nice whining sound in 1, 2, and 3.. 4th and 5th rub sometimes and i have a small leak too. Im replacing my tranny soon with a LSD and a new clutch

 

i have a small leak that i first noticed today. the only whining noise i get is when i first start the car for the day and i put it in 1st gear then it stops. my car only has 73,000 miles on it, i didnt think i would have problems already.i dont really know to much about tranny's, i thought a new one comes with a new clutch and flywheel.does it not ? where can i get these parts online? and btw thanx for your responses you helped me out tremendously.

As for the mileage on your car... it doesn't matter because there are people who have gotten this problem around 50k-60k miles. You have plenty time left though... you don't have to jump onto getting it replaced. Just drive like you always do for the next month or so and see if it becomes worse. I've had it for close to 5 months now. Your car won't have bad gas mileage or anything... just that annoying whining and leak.

 

i just looked at that site ,theres 2 types of manual transmissions a locking and non locking differantial, which one do i want? and whats the difference between them?

 

I30 come w/ locking... but more common and cheaper to find are the non-locking.

All I30s come w/ locking
Maximas in Canada come w/ locking too

everything else is non-locking

 

am i gonna have the same problem down the road if i buy one of these tranny's or do they update them? btw you da man

don't bother replacing anything yet... just keep driving and see if it gets any worse. Your condition is no where as bad as mine is. You have plenty of miles before u start noticing major things.

 

My driver side axel seal leaked for a couple of months. I replaced the seal and haven't had any problems since then. And my maxima is a Canadian Maxima. I was wonder if it was just the non-locking differential trannies that had this problem or all 4th gen trannies?



and I believe only the Canadian Maxima SE's had the locking differential in them.

 

No, not all I30 came with VSLD. Most seem to have it, but definately not all of them.

If one has bad bearings, then replacin the drive-axel seal is a temporary fix to the leaking fluid problem. If you do indeed have bad bearings the seal will leak again. My car has gone through 3 seals.

It seems all 5-speeds, 95-96, Maxima/I30, locking and non-locking trannies are suseptible to bad bearings.

 

what problems have you experienced? what did you do to fix them? what tranny can i get so i wont have problems anymore ? thx for your help

You can rebuilt it, have someone else rebuilt it, or drive the pis* out of this one till the bearings are about to fall apart and then take your chances on a used one from a junkyard. The thing is that this is a comman problem for 4th gen maxima's and if you let it go too long, the bearings will wear down, metal throughout your tranny, and mess other stuff up bad...its not good to wait unless your just going to replace the unit

once it starts to leak, that means there is excesive play in the inner joint into the tranny, and the seal cant seal on the joint like when it was new.

The 5th generation one will work (2000-2001) but you will need two New Axles for it and they are had to come by and expensive...

Why 2 new axles and not just the driver side axle when putting a 5th gen tranny into a 4th gen? I thought they were a direct interchange?

 

the 2001-2001 AE Maxima had a limited slip in it. Therefore you would need two new axles, that is if you got the AE 5-speed tranny.

 

so what do u guys think is my best bet? a new tranny or fix the problem. the thing is if i get a new tranny will i have the same problem down the road?
