New to the forum, and don't even have a Maxima. I do love the car, all cars for that matter.
My question is this. My sister has a 96 Maxima with 90,000 miles. the dealer told her she needed new rear rotors and pads. The cost she was presented with was $900. She isn't in the same town as I am otherwise I would just look at it myself. These are not Brembo brakes, otherwise I think the price wouldn't be as out of line. Any suggestions on what I could suggest to her? If this is a good price, please say so!!!

as a car enthusiast you should know they always rip you off. there is prolly 250-300 bucks in parts and the rest is "labor"

WAIT!!!!DID YOU SAY JUST THE REAR...THAT PRICE IS RIDICULUS.

tell her to go to a private shop if you cant do it for her. FOR JUST THE REAR pads and rotors should be less than $200 for the parts then + labor..at midas or something like that i would think it wouldnt be more than $100 in labor.

 

You can buy Brembo replacement rotors for about $100/set. Toss in a set of pads for about $50 and there's your new brakes.

If you can take the wheel off the car, you can replace everything yourself with a 17mm and a 14mm socket. The rotor just slips off the hub once the caliper is taken off.

$900 bucks is highway robbery. Tell you sister never to go back to that dealer again. Have your sister go to a local mechanic and get a quote for new rotors and pads for the rear. It should come in around 250-300 bucks MAXIMUM!

 

dude if she lives anywhere near you. id get a ride over buy the parts for her, install them, and then collect. just think how much money you will save her. besides she was quoted at 900 so its not like she wouldnt be eternally greatfull for you doing it. maybe she would give your a dollar keep cool, later

or you could order them from somewhere like tire rack where i got mine and then just have her find a place that will only charge the labor to put them on

I did mine for $75. $50 for rotors and $25 for pads. Took 2 hours.

That dealership should be reported to the office of fair trading or something..
what town is she in? Maybe someone on here can recommend a good mechanic in the area she can go to.

Sprint's probably right. Check out an itemized list of what they were saying they needed to do.

However, I wouldn't suggest using that dealership like...ever?! I've only run across one decent dealership in CT so far.

 

You all have confirmed my original thinking. I will certainly try to help her out, but if I can't I will send her to a private shop. I do like the aftermarket idea... Mmmmm Brembo!
She is in Kalamazoo, MI, and I am in Toledo, OH but I might be able to get over there!
