shifter stiff in 1st and 2nd...

I was on my way back to work, and came to like the last intersection, and was heel-toe downshifting, geting ready to make the turn, and had some trouble getting into second. it was like it was hitting the synchro, grinding like a missed gear. I pulled it back out of gear and put it back in again, but had to stop hard because the light changed. when i got stopped, i could smell clutch burning, which is normal now that it has begun to slip a little, but when the light changed, it was stiff going back into first. i thought i wasn't gonna be able to get it back in gear. well, i got it in gear, but when i went to second, it was just as stiff, like something was binding the shifter. Third and 4th are fine, but that 1st and 2nd are just really stiff. What would cause this?

Thanks

Mike

so i should dismiss any concern about my tranny? I went back out just now and it was fine, but after about the third time i moved from 1-2 and then moved around the pattern, i could no longer get back into 1-2nd.

How long has your clutch been slipping? It sounds like your clutch is gonna go real soon! The clutch is eventually gonna go and you will not be able to get into gear.

it has been slipping for a good two-three weeks. I don't have the money for it right now, but does everyone think it is more the clutch than the tranny? Is there anything else i need to look at?I am gonna change the tranny oil in the morning-i know its sunday and its easter, but i gotta have a way to go.

i can get into gears but i often have to fight the shifter because it feels like i'm hitting something along the way before it gets into gear... this has gotten more frequent and lately has been happening just everytime i shift.

my clutch is actually grabbing very well..
i've bled the clutch fluid and flushed the MTF.. i'm scared for my transmission as well..

I am really thinking/hoping it is a clutch, as it is apparent that all the gears are stiffer when the car is moving. I want as much input on this as i can-please help.

Did you check the master and slave cylinder?

Sometimes the Slave cylinder or the clutch master cylinder doenst put out enough pressure and the clutch moves off the flywheel only a little.

This can hurt shifting. The problem is also worsened by a warmer engine. You might have a jammed slave cylinder or a clutch master cylinder thats not holding up it's end of the bargain.

I've had that happen to my 91 maxima and its strusfrating.

If your mechanic is good there are little viewing holes around the tranny that let you check the condition of the clutch.

If not, pull the slave cylinder and there should be a little rubber cover. Take that cover off and you should be able to see how much meat you have on the clutch.

Hope this helps

I was scared about this as well. My third gear felt rougher than normal but now after driving it a lot it is feeling better. So i dont what was wrong but apparently it seems to be better. Hope you figure something out.
