Is it safe to wash the engine?

Hi guys

As you can see from my name, i'm a new kid to this site. I just bought a 2nd hand 97 max with 101km on it. The car is great.
My question is, is it safe to wash the engine by myself? If it is safe, do i need to cover anything? I haven't done any mods to engine YET. :-)

My 2nd question is, my ashtray on my max seems to be broken or out of allignment cause whenever i press on the ashtray, is not coming out. I have to use a flat head screw driver to open it. Any suggestion on how to fix it?

By the way, any canadians on this site?
I'm a canadian. Just curious.

There are some places you need to cover so you wont get them wet, Im not sure exactly, Im sure some1 will let you know. Your problem with the ash tray is that its not positioned correctly when it was screwed in. I take out my dash all teh time, and the last time I took out my ash tray, it would stay closed. Just had to recheck the way i screwed it in and now its fine. Check that screw, its only one, you wont tell the difference, but the ash tray does.

My other question is

My right passanger headlight housing is a bit dirty inside. It doesn't look good when you compare two headlights and the passanger side headlight is not as shiny (reflective part)as the other one.
My question is, is there anyway to clean it?

To follow up on the previous post, how do i take out the ashytray? Can i take out the ashtray by itself or do i need to take out the entire panel? If i have to take out the entire panel, forget it, i just thought i can take a few screws out and fix the ashtray problem.

Thanks for the post guys.

You can clean the headlights several ways, if you are going to do one, might as well do the toehr. You can put teh headlights (assemblies) in teh oven for about 15-20 minutes at 250 degrees, then take out and separate the glass/platstic from the housing. Then you can go and clean, or, you can just put some windex and water and mix it around without taking the headlight apart (thanks to the org member who gave me the idea ). I think that would be the better choice.
As far as the dash, to get to the ashtray, all you need to do is take off the peice that is around your shifter (auto/manual) Just pries right off with a flat head. When it is off, you can see the screw for the ashtray in the middle.
