Axle leaking on 5spd

We are in the midst of a 5spd conversion.

While putting the new axle in the driver's side, the catch ring at the end of the axle was not allowing the axle to go in. So we took it off.

It was fine there for 2 days, then we jacked the car up and it started leaking...a little at first, and about 1/2 hour later it was pouring out.

So we went and got a new ring put on the end of the axle and re-installed today. It seemed to stay much better in place....there is only about 2mm play when shaking the axle point nearest the tranny.

But it's still leaking!

Now - the leak, when I looked at it, appeared to be coming from under the oil seal, not over it. But this is a brand new seal.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I had a b!tch of a time trying to get that axle in because that ring was jacked, I'm not ruling out that I damaged the seal trying to get it in...
