What are the differences between all 4th gens?

I saw something similar to this on the main page, but I don't understand half of it. I'm not really a car person, I love them, to drive them, but I don't know all the terms.

Could you guys break it down for me? I am going to buy a 4th gen this summer so I want to know the advantages of buying a '98 over a '97 so on and so forth.

I know they gave the '97's and up a facelift, but I'm not sure what all they changed about them.

Hope this thread doesn't get locked.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

they really didnt change anything major cept for the wheels and front end and rear end i think and you know that was in 97...i know 99s seem to be slower for the most part when you are modding(cause they got a precat that isnt removable)

I know the earlier 4th gens 95-96 i think has maxima spelt like this on the back of it " M A X I M A " and on the 97-99 i think its spelt like this "MAXIMA" there is no spacing. and the lights on the back are a little different too. I like the M A X I M A the best but thats pretty much useless info
but gl w/ ur new car oh get a 5 speed too

97-99 has crossbar on grill in front and turn signals below the brake lights in the rear. In 98 the changed the odometer to digital and made a few other minor changes. In 98 side air bags where available but I belive it is a pretty rare option.

All 4th gen Maximas have the same engine and are basically the same. There are some claims that the earlier 4th gens are slightly more powerful due to less emissions equipment and faster due to being slightly lighter but if there is any speed/power difference it is minimal. Most of these differences where collected from this thread, if you have any additions or corrections please post them there.

Any options or changes continue to the next year unless they are noted to be removed or noted for only one year.

1995 - 1st year 4th gen, some early production models had OBD1. Rear oxygen sensor in cat. Only year GXE could have S&C package and 5 speed transmission. Only year SE could get S&C package without sunroof.

1996 - revised emissions equipment, new cup holder, power passenger seat available (with leather package). Only year removable in console cup holder available (but most used Maxes no longer have it)

1997 – Restyled front and rear (front now has crossbar on grill, rear now has turn signals below taillights), improved crash protection, new steering wheel, 16" 5 Star wheels on SE, Homelink on GLE and SE with S&C package, SE got red Gauge needles. Two new steering wheel designs, one for GXE/GLE and one exclusive to SE. New center console - two drink cupholder with hinged lid, lose change holder, lose ashtray in back, lower armrest. New design of double din headunit. Tweeters moved from the A-pillar trim to the door. Cornering lamps removed. Rear oxygen sensor moved behind cat to b-pipe, B-pipe made longer. Rear emblem changed from individual letters to connected letters -- M A X I M A, to M_A_X_I_M_A. GLE trim got GLE badge on trunk.

1998 - Side air bags available (with deluxe seating package), ‘Cold weather package’ replaced by ‘Deluxe seating package’, red gauge needles on all trim levels (95-97 GXE/GLE had white needles), digital odometer (with two trip meters), climate control redesign, Fuel and temp. Gauges now ‘Mirror image’ instead of facing the same direction.

1999 - Emissions equipment and ECU wireing similar to 5th gen models, SE limited edition available, security chip in key, head unit redesign, ‘ambient temperature’ feature added to automatic climate control, three point seat belt for rear center position.

On CA emission 99's Front pre-cat built into header, two extra oxygen sensors to monitor pre-cats (total of 4), Swirl valve in intake to improve emissions. Special aftermarket Y-pipe required and only 1 pre-cat can be removed.

for some reason.. the 97's tend to be the popular ones around here. I believe there was a poll once and it was between 97's and 95's ???

Oh, and it seems like the majority of the world's SE-L owners have gotta be on this board... i could be exaggerating.

LOOK OUT FOR THIS !!!

Hey,
I've got a 95 GXE (stick). I can SMOKE my friends 97 GLE (auto) with half the miliage. But I can only smoke him till 185km/h. My GXE is speed governed!! (it's been freakin me out lately) The SE and GLE were sold with better speed rated tires, and the GXE with 180km/h rated tires, so they governed this model!!! Just to give you the heads up about it!! I've been trying to find a stable way around this, but so far have had no luck!!

Seriously though, I love my 95 GXE, she's at 220km, the compression is perfect, I have only had one injector die in two years of racing. And the miliage seems to be quite a bit better than what other MAX drivers are reporting. I do maintain it constantly which I'm sure helps.

All the best to you and your choice of Max!

max002: The reason there are so many se-l owners here is because a majority of the 99's were limited. It was Nissan's desperate attempt to boost sales when they were about to go bankrupt.

dave harms: go to www.vqpower.com, then have a write up on how to remove the limiter the ghetto way.

One big thing that I've heard also, is that the 95-96's didnt have some of the supports in the doors. This made them lighter, and *supposedly* a little faster. Thats just what Ive heard.

I thought the reason the 97-99 where heavier was when the front and rear where redesigned the bumper supports where strengthed for better crash protection.

That could be, but I was always told that it was the crossmembers in the doors. I might be wrong though, but Ill look into it.

Yeah that's right. It's probably just down right now, because it just worked for me. Just a warning though, if you do disconnect your speed limiter, your CEL will come on.

The reason that 97s are the most popular is because they have the newer 4th gen look. The 97-99s look exactly the same. But the 97s are as moddable as earlier 4th gens (95/96). The 99 cali emissions Maximas are the most restrictive b/c they have 4 O2 sensors in their Y pipe to make sure the ECU knows when you remove the pre-cats.

The 95 96 Maximas could get a JWT ECU, and the 97 can use it, too. 98s and 99s can't, although I've heard that someone with a 98 has the ECU.
