plus size tire question.

i just 17" g35 wheels. tires on them are 225/50/17. i know the right offset for 17's are 45 profile. i dont notice much of a difference while driving and i think it removes a little bit of wheel gap.. anyway. i need new tires soon and was wondering if i should stick with 225/50s instead of getting the "correct" 45's .. whats bad about having a slightly bigger profile on the tire.

where did you hear the 45 is the correct profile for 17's? the height of the sidewall is dependant on the profile as well as the width. i believe if you go with a 45 series tire you will need to get 245's to keep the correct wheel diameter to keep your speedometer correct. i don't know if you can fit 245's on g35 rims. as far as how wide of a tire you can fit...that depends on how wide the rims are. so for you to get the correct tires, check how wide your rims are, find a tire with a width that will fit on the rims, then pick a profile that will give you an overall diameter close to stock.

so you are not limited to 45 series tires. i'm runnin 40 series tires...although mine are 265's so that makes the sidewall the same height.

hmm...ok so the rims are 17x7 dont think i can fit 245s. what is my correct offset if i want to buy 215/x/17 tires or 225/x/17 tires? is there like a chart somewhere i can find this at? thanks.. and what are teh downsides to haveing wring offset? too big and too small

overall diameter = rim diameter (17in) + 2*[ rim width(mm) x profile (%)]/25.4

the stock tires are 205/65/15.
stock diameter is 15 + 2*205*.65/25.4 = 25.49

so for my 265/40/17's, the diameter = 17 + 2*265*.40/25.4 = 25.35in
this is within the 2% tollerances

if you go with 215's, you will need 50 series tires.
diameter = 17 + 2*215*.50/25.4 = 25.46 ...practically on the money

if you go with 225's, you will have to choose between 45 or 50 series.
45's will give 24.97"
50's will give 25.86"
both are within 2%, but the 50 series are closer
