0903 & 0705 Codes (EVAP Canister Vent Cntrl Vlv & Cntrl Sys)

My '97 SE 5sp has had surging problems for the past 100K miles. It was there when I bought it, but it was slight and the dealer could not re-create it. It's worse now and is more of nuisance than anything. Since I've joined the ORG, I've learned to read the codes and got 0903 EVAP Canister Vent Control Valve and 0705 EVAP Control System.

Has anyone had experience with these codes and what is involved to test further or replace the "necessary" components?

Also, when ever I try the search feature it tells me that I have insufficient priviledges. Is there someone I need to contact or am I missing something.

Thanks for your help!

- Jeff

hey jeff,
I have posted a few times about this and how to replace it but since search is not working...i'll tell ya again.

I had the same two codes come up and it was the vent control valve thats causing it. The valve is located on the EVAP canister's front right side. Its bolted on vertically onto the EVAP Canister. The EVAP Can is located by the driver side rear tire. Silde under your car and u will see it. The valve has a electrical plug going to it on top and a hose that connects to it. Just pull the hose out and remove the valve by removeing the 2 10mm bolts holding it to the EVAP Can. Unplug the electrical plug and replace with new one. A new Vent Control vavle goes for around $70.

This is a very easy job to do but it can get complicated if you dont remove the bolts carefully. Make sure you spray some WD40 on the 2 bolts prior to removing and dont over tighten! Dont forget to reset the ECU!

good luck.

Thanks! Do you remember what type of symptoms you'd get with a bad vent control valve, if any?
