To buy or not to buy??

I came across what seems to be a very good deal. A friend will sell me a 97 max se for $4000. It's a white 5 speed with every option but the only downside is that it has 170,000 on the odometer. This seems to be a deal that I cannot pass up. Let me know what you all think. thanks

What kind of maintenance has been done to the vehicle. If everything has been maintained(oil changes, battery, spark plugs, etc...) then why not? I would if everything looked good. How is the interior? How is the exterior? Any pics?

I am pretty sure all of the maintenence is up to date. The car is owned by a 65 y/o who bought the car new and is very meticulous about reparing things when and if they go wrong. As far as the miles go, the miles are mostly highway due to the line of work that he is in. No pics as of yet but the car is very clean. Any problems in particular that I should look for as far as the drivetrain?

alot of the 97 maxs have an alternator recall so look for that and also the 5speed differential bearings like to go bad

Thanks for the replies. I am also interested in some sort of rough estimates on what monthly insurance rates you guys are paying. Right now I pay $160 a month on an accord for comprehensive for a 20 y/o with 2 tickets . I am assuming it will be more due to it being a newer, more powerful car.

About $450/6 months ($75/month) for 95 GLE full coverage (IL state minimums). 16 years old with clear record I'm with my parents so its cheaper and I have 2 discounts from State Farm

Where are you in IL? Holy ***t that is cheap! Here in IA its about $900 every 6 months, and that's just liability im 16 as well. what discounts are you getting from State Farm?

JBza: I would deffinantly get it. If you are worried about the miles, you can find a fresh VQ motor with under 50k for ~$600.

I live in Chicago My regular insurance price was about $700/6 months, but then I got good grade discount, Steer Clear discount (watch a movie, read a mag, and fill out a booklet with like 30 trips - just put BS in the whole book so they think you're a safe driver =P), and I forgot that I get multiple car discount (we have 3 cars on our policy) so 3 total discounts =P and my insurance goes down a few bucks every month since I don't get caught my cops or crash the car

Whereabouts would I find a low mileage VQ? I am actually planning to swap an JDM h22 into my accord so this would be a piece of cake to do myself. Should I look locally, or should I look into importing a motor due to the fact it would most likely have lower mileage?
