engine oil type

Hey guys just wondering what type of oil should be used for my 97 with 95,000 miles on it. I had been putting it in 5W-30 up till now but today i got my oil change done and the guy told me to put in 10W-40 cause its a older car with high mileage. What do u guys think? is this good?

If you want 10W then use 10W30, not 40. I tend to use 10W30 because the smaller viscosity range should give me a more durable oil. Less VI improvers need to be added to the oil to hurt its performance. You sacrifice a wee bit of gas mileage, though compared to 5W30. But if I really want great gas mileage, I'd buy a small 4 banger or go 55 mph.

Summer - 10W30 (Temp. outside doesn't go below 20F)
Winter - 5W30 (You can also use this all year, but you have to use it in winter time since it goes below 20F)

Unless your car is burning tons of oil, the 10W-40 isn't necessary yet. 5W-30 winter and 10W-30 summer for conventional oils is probably the best way to go for you. If using a good synthetic, either one is acceptable year round.

Keep using what the manual states, 5w30. The worse case is it'll burn more of it. When oil consumption becomes a problem, then worry about changing viscosites...

But the diff between 10w30 and 5w30 really isn't worth worrying about.
