Well, the essential first mod is the Front Strut Tower Bar. It's like $75 from Courtesy Nissan and improves steering feel and sharpness on the turns tremendously. Second mod should be the Rear Sway Bar. Cattman.com sells them for $160. The RSB reduces body roll on turns and completely transforms how your Maxima can take the corners.
In my opinion, forget the appearance mods and go for the handling mods first. Then, when you've got the handling to carry the image of a performance car, then go for the appearance mods to complement your handling mods. The other way around seems a bit phony to me...stock Maxima with a bunch of visual enhancements but no handling improvements. In fact, it almost screams rice!
But that's just my opinion.

Yeah,
If you're strapped for cash, clear out your tail lights to last you till you get $80 bucks or so. After that, buy some clear corners & a FSTB.
It's not exactly a big performance difference, but it'll look a hell of a lot better, and you'll notice a difference in handling. If you got a little more money, throw a Intake and/or a RSB in that.

The most priceless mod in the world is:
moving your spray nossils for the windshield to the sides. So when you are waiting for the light and someone is next to you with the window down, you can squirt them with your favorite liquid
It is very fun.
