Have you dropped the plastic panels under the engine? Use a mirror, magnet, anything that will help you find where it is.

I would definitely find it before I drove again.

Go to your local auto store and find yourself a magnet... its a good investment if you got slippery fingers...

Gotta be engine *compartment* because of two things;

1) He was only changing a grill - he wouldn't have anything on the engine open

2) He has run the engine since then, and it still runs...

I did the same thing while doing my foglight mod. It's probably resting on top of the little plastic panels under the fans. That's where mine was. Just wiggle the panels or hit em' from the bottom and the socket should pop out.

It could be there or between the radiator and the front bumper. That is where the socket feel when I was messing with my grill. I just unbolted the radiator and tilted it back to create more space so I could reach down there.

I lost a socket once while working on my car (fuel pressure gauge install). 400 miles (mostly highway) and an autocross later I found it wedged near the front engine mount.

There are two "plastic shields". Each one is held in place by 3 Philips screws. Once you remove them, you can bend them towards the ground & who knows if your socket might fall out? I had to unsecure those shields when I installed my mesh grill.

There are about three sockets in my Ford Ranger's engine compartment from working on it and dropping the spark plug socket. LOL

I did the same exact thing when installing my grill. I just got under the car and put my hand in there somehow and grabbed it. But those long extendable pen magnets are an amazing world altering must have!!!! AND, they fit in your pocket
