Tie rod question

Went to get alignment and the dude told me that my 2 inner tie rods need to be replaced and a ball joint. My max does make noise when turning at low speed. The dealer is asking about $500+ just to install this and charging $100 for one tie rod. Where can I purchase this elsewhere besides dealer?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks...

You should be able to pick up tie rod ends at any Automotive supply chain. Have an alignment shop install everything and set your toe.

So it's not worth the time and money on doing this yourself?

BTW, saw your car at the meet on Saturday...

It can be a PITA to get tie rods off. Besides, your alignment will be completely messed up when your done. It's just easier to have that job done by somebody who can finish it up by resetting the toe when it's all done.

Got my Injen intake at the meet and some Aluminum door sills. Love the way they look on the car. Sets it off really nice.

I got both tie-end rods and balljoints replaced with alignment for $650. There are two different replacement balljoint parts listed. One is an integral part of the control arm and requires you to replace the control arm and balljoint together ($200/each). This is what dealer will use. The other is an aftermarket balljoint that can be replaced with a balljoint press. Just call around and find the shops that are confident they can do it with the aftermarket part.

I had my 2 Tierods replaced + Alignment...it was $360. This includes the price of the Tie Rods.

The Tie Rods were 68.00 each at Napa Auto Parts. Thats what it reads off the bill.

What parts do I need?

Hi all,

Dead thread revival, here. . .

I went to the alignment shop and was told that the threads on one (possibly both) of my tie-rod ends were seized, so my front end toe adjustment could not be made until they were replaced.

My question: Which part(s) do I need (specifically) to correct this? (They were kinda vague at the shop about what I needed to get).

Thanks in advance!

i had a tie rod break off last month while i was making a 3 pt turn out of my drive way. since then i never turn the steering wheel all the way to eitehr side anymore. i think that is when u stress the join the most. anyway. new tie rod cost 100 bucks form dealer.. me and my dad installed it. didnt take too long. but yeah. allign was massivly screwed up. if your pretty machanicly inclined, its not that bad of a job. just make sure u got an alignment shop close by. i ripped the outer boot from too much pulling. so be careful there.

How did you know you needed a tie rod? Did the front jump L&R when under acceleration? that's what mine does.

well.. how did you machanice know your threads were seized? did he take it apart? i doubt it. anyway, if you tie rod threads are seized, sut get a new tie rod. 100 bucks from nissan. i fixed it myself so i duno the labor cost at a shop.. i dunno how cheap the aftermarket tie rods are. if you take it out carefully enough, u wont need anything else unless your inner and outer boots are ripped.(outer is more likely to rip) then replace those and regrease them. if the threads on your rack and pinion(the mount the tie rods go into) then your repair bill will be in the 800-1000 range. so lets hope its just the rod threads.

Thanks for the reply -

Actually, they did try to adjust the tie rod so they could change the toe setting, which was how they discovered it was seized, so wherever the adjustment you need to make to adjust the toe is, is the location of the seized threads.

I assume it's the outer threads, so I'm just trying to figure out if I need the whole tie rod (both ends) & ball joint or what. . .

Thanks again,

-K-

ask the machanic what he thinks. my rod wasnt seized at teh toe side so i didnt pay much attention to how that was setup.. my rod poped off from the inner boot. but if the threads for the toe adjsut are on the rod.. then im assuming u will need a new rod..

Right. I understand that much - but, inner, outer, ball joint, etc.? Trying to break it down on a component basis. Anyway - I'll figure it out. . .

Thx.
