Horrible sound when making a hard left turn. Bad CV?

Loud rubbing noise, almost sounded like nails on a chalk board with the bass turned up. I'm almost positive its a bad CV joint, how easy is it to replace and how much and am I looking at. Also, how long do I have before it HAS to be replaced. 125K miles on car. thanks

i saw one on ebay for $25. the joint shouldn't be hard to change with the right tools used. i'm just having problems with replacing mine because i don't have the right tools. and it's my first time doing it. but i don't think it's going to be hard...it'll just get greasy.

that's the link to the cv boot/joint replacement instuction. the only part that i'm unsure of this instruction is the draining of the tranny fluid part. the service manual did not mention anything about doing so. i'm still waiting for others to reply to mine post. hope this helps.

my car is completely stock and I'm not sure that the CV joint is the problem, it was just my guess. Is that the only thing that would cause this horrible rubbing sound? (i'm possitive its not the tires).

Im not sure a CV could make such a noise...how has your power steering level been? I have a very slow leak in a steering boot that requires me to monitor and add fluid occasionally. If the fluid is fine....i dunno what this could be....a CV usually makes a popping sound, and will make noise whether turning right or left...maybe just relubricate all the components and re-assess?

once a joint makes noise the axle needs replacement for the joint is now too damaged. It def sounds like a CV joint, are your CV boots torn and have they been torn for a while???

Look at the inside of your wheel, you should see dark grease splattered all over it if your CV is bad.

i'll have to check when I get off work. Never really noticed anything like this other than the other night when making that hard left turning in a parking lot.

SOUNDS

!!!
OK, I get sounds like you are describing too. In my experience it has ALWAYS been the 'stone guard' for my rotors. (NOT SAYING IT ALWAYS WILL BE...)
Mine are too close to the disk, and if I slide around corners, sometimes afterwards it can 'grind' or 'scrap' for a while... particularly when I corner.
Your axles flex a bit, and there isn't a lot of tolerance...
Just use a screw driver and give the stone guards a little push away from the disks. Make sure you do it all the way around the disk.

CV's usually make a less 'chalkboard and nails' sound. They may be more 'pulsed' or 'crunchy' or 'bumby' or 'something' sound.

Good Luck!

to test for blown CV's turn your wheels all the way to left and right while driving If you hear a constant clicking sound they are blown. Or you could look at your rims for grease spots.

Try making a sharp left turn from a complete stop and listen for a clicking type noise. If it's there, replace the axle. The CV boot may or may not be split apart. If it is split open and there's grease all over, replace the axle.

If it's more of a scraping noise, it's probably just the rotor guard. Bend it back away from the rotor.

ok, i just made numerous hard left and right turns, some slow, some fast. Only heard the click noise once and it click liked 4 times. I kept trying ot make it come back by changing the amount I turned the wheel but i couldn't. Is there a posibility its my worn struts creaking instead since they are indeed worn out? thanks

Also, nothing on the back of my wheel cept a lot of brake dust. thanks again

It depends if the clicking was caused by you turning the wheel or acellerating. CVs only click when you give it gas, suspension related problems will generally click when you are turning the wheel.

oh, so if I hear the clicking noise while doing a coasting uturn (no gas, just momentum) thats not the CVs? well hopefully it is just the bad struts. I just pray for another GR2 group deal to come around sometime soon.
