Hacked airbox and K&N dropin filter, good idea?
I am looking at my 1st mod, did a lot of reading on the hybrid the CAI and HAI intakes. So would a drop in K&N filter in a hacked airbox give a good improvement, say close to the injen CAI, has anyone tried this and if so, how did it work? Would it be a good idea to turn the battery 90 degrees to allow more air into the hacked airbox? I have a 99 auto gle, thanks for any feedback.

i did that for a about 6 months.. works great.. it wont be an injencai, hai gain cause all the air has to come in thru that small 3x 4 hole in the bottome airbox.. but its an improvement with a nice slight growl when u stomp.

Open up the back of the resonator box under the battery tray. Keeps the intake quiet but allows more air to flow into the air box.
The most restrictive part of the stock intake is the snorkle inlet. By opening up the box under the battery try, you allow the stock intake to breath better. There's cooler air down under there, suck it up!

Thanks for the great info folks, now njmaxseltd, when you say open the back of the resonator box you mean the side facing the driver not the grill correct and if so, why not the front, is it a water issue? As far as hp, anyone have a guess as to how much better an injen cai or hybrid would be over this mod? Is the airflow as good or close on the flat drop in filter compared to the cone type? Thanks again for the replies.

I hacked the airbox in my truck and used a 2-1/2" heater hose as an intake pipe that runs up to the front grille, I then attached a PVC coupler from home depot at the end of it. This serves as a scoop which sits right behind the front grille. This plus the stock plumbing that goes to the fender well greatly improved throttle response with a nice deep throaty rumble when mashing the accelerator. I used the K&N drop-in filter too. I'm planning to do something similar to the Maxima first by cutting a hole into the air box and running a pipe thru the fender well to see if I can get any satisfactory gains before spending $$$ on a CAI or RAM air. The issue with these aftermarket intakes is that it still suck up hot air (plenty of it) which impedes on performance during really hot summer days. I'm not sure if anyone has heard of Volant Cool Intake System. They don't make a kit for the 95 Maximas because these kits utilizes the newer car/truck's stock fender well intake plumbing. The filter is conical but to prevent it from sucking up hot air, it is enclosed in a box which has an inlet hole and tubing to utilize the fender well inlet.
