I've got this pic as reference but it's for a 97.



I'm assuming the wire is in the same position but is just a different color on the 96. There is no green wire in that position on my 96 harness. I'd rather not take the dash apart to hook to the TAM screw behind the tach if I can help it.

I'm installing a Summit Racing RPM switch to operate my MEVI since my harlan is dead. It cannot be run off the coil.

Any quick help is appreciated... it's 11pm and I'm out in my garage and its about 100 degrees out there. I'd like to get this done ASAP.

plurco thankyou for your post but I truly and honestly cannot tell which wire in that picture is being connected to... it's just not close enough. what color is the wire. is it indeed green?

I just broke the **** out of my dash trying to get to the TAM screw, and I am now stuck and can't figure out which screws I need to loosen to get the guage cluster out. **** I'm so livid right now.

 

Where it says Green means that the green wire on the S-AFC taps into pin 5 on the connector. Those colors are not of the actual colors on the harness, the colors are just corresponding to the S-AFC wires lol......

 

it says under the pic. it is white and green.

 

This is simple Neal. Whatever you are tapping the tach wire for, just run the wire from the device and tap it into the wire that is leading to Pin 5 on the ECU connector. It is labeled Pin 5 as if you were looking at the back of the harness with it plugging in the ECU. I hope this helps lol....

Works like a charm. The instructions it came with are somewhat vague though. They don't specify that it doesn't work with coil ignition system like ours, hence my need to find the tach wire. I can't pull the signal off the coil like with my Harlan. Also I haven't yet figured out the trick to getting it set right. I have the thing set at 3400rpm and my MEVI opens at an indicated 5400RPM. When I had it set at 2000 for testing my MEVI was opening at 3000 indicated. This leads me to believe it is set up for 4 cylinder operation since a little algebra comes up with:

(x/3400) = (6/5400)----> x = 3.8

(x/2000) = (6/3000)----> x = 4.

I think the 3.8 I got is just tach error, since it obviously wouldn't be set up for 3.8 cylinder operation



Ramius--I was under the impression that on the 97+ the tach wire was a green wire coming out of pin 5. I didn't have a green wire coming out of pin 5 I had a white wire coming out of pin 5 (with green stripe). I figured all years would have the wire in the same place since ECUs are interchangable between all years (with 99 being the exception apparently) but the color of the wire was throwing me off and I really didn't want to go hacking up my wiring harness trying different wires to see which one made my RPM switch work.

 

good happy to know its working for you.. yeah I had been afraid of the coil pack prob with the summit unit, but with two of them going off my ecu tach wire all is well now. I was under the impression it was set for 8cyl, but interesting info.. hm

 

oh and my summit switches indicate double the switched rpm. example: set @ 2600rpm activates the circuit at 5200rpm.

weird I wonder why the difference. summit told me on the phone they were designed for 8cyl application but i dont get it? oh well, it works and thats what matters
