Parting a car

What should I do to part out a car...what do I do with property taxes, what about the title? Do I have to tell anyone? What do I do with the scrap pieces left over? What is the legality of it? Give me all the info on it, cuz I know theres more then just selling parts...

Re: Parting a car

Part it out at will! As long as you have the frame, you own the car, and the title is still valid. When you eventually have the frame hauled away to a scrap yard, you'll have to sign them away the title. (In fact, many salvage yards will not accept a car, even a frame, without the title.) Don't bother registering the car again though!

Regarding property taxes, you still pay them, but the value of the car once you start to part it out is next to nothing, so taxes are negligable.

I am not aware of any states that have laws specifically governing parting out a car. Normal titling laws will still be applicable, however. Check to see what the law is in your state.

Email me with any specific questions!
