Should i get a auto? (help, with permit)
ill be getting a car, hopefuly, and i was wondering if its worth to get an auto. i dont need something too fast... but i want to beat the average honda that rolls by, and ofcoarse, teh mustangs. if i put a intake, ypipe, and exaust into a se 98-99, whats teh outcome?
i need a car that has..
reliability
quality
speed
HANDLING
And since, my rents have a gs300, im used to having acceleration with nice handling. will i get this with a auto max?

I eat and talk on the phone. It's pretty sad though, my friend could do all of those things at ones, in his 5 speed. That's talent.
Anyways, baseer, I drive an auto, Im 16, and I love it. I would take a 5 speed over my auto any day, but none the less, I do love it.

the reason i ask, is that i dont think my rents will let me get a manual. they say its too much hassel. is the manual transmission on teh maxiams harder to learn than on a smaller car?
i figure, get a a maxima, becuae of the speed... but if its auto, there is no point. will i get under 7 seconds from 0-60 with a auto (ypipe, intake)
if im allowed, ill get a se 5 speed.. but if i cant,, ill just get a fully loaded altima

Well, let me put it this way. I drive a 95 SE Automatic, and my mom drives a 95 SE 5 speed, and I tried forever to learn to drive manual on her car, but I never really got the hang of it till I got my car and got a feel for the pedal, and how the car worked.
I have the Auto, and I still kick the **** out of most cars I race, but I do know my limits. Ive only been beat by 1 honda, and this wasnt a ghetto honda either, this had a turbo and everything in it. I know my limitations, and I know what I can't beat with my auto.
I say go for the auto, there's no hassle, it's still fast, and you can do other things while driving. (phone, food)

I love my auto, I have little ones and I can't begin to tell you how beneficial it has been to not have to worry about shifting for myself. Once you have little ones you will see what I am talking about.
I believe they both have their pros and cons. I think the fun factor lies more with the stick though. I am considering going to the manual transmission if I get a 2003 Max, don't quite know yet. But for now I really enjoy driving my auto

Although, if you want learn stick the right way, I would suggest getting a real piece of junk that doesn't idle right, has a rickety shifter and may even be missing a few gates between the gears. THAT'S how you learn to drive

the bottom line is if you are crazy about cars, and you would devote a lot of your free time into making your car a top performer, go with the stick because what disgusts me the most is seeing some dude who has done so much to their car to make it a sweet racer and a fine-looking piece of metal, and yet has an automatic. if driving qualifies in your personality as "hobbies/interests", go with the stick; if driving qualifies in your personality as "pasttimes" get an auto so you can distract yourself with numerous other activities while you're driving and hope you don't crash

EDIT: BTW, get a 5 spd, you'll have no choice but to learn it and love it. Once you drive 5 spd, you'll never go back to auto.

Oh, and I hate my automatic. Lie to your father and tell him you'll save up and pay for any repairs on it. Tell him that people with doctorates in "car science" say that a good manual trans is infinitely more reliable and easier to fix.
And pull your economy card; the manual gets better gas mileage.
As for handling; the Maxima does not handle as well as other cars. If you want handling, you'll have to mod. I say, check out a Nissan 240SX 5spd if you want a car like that.

Get a 5 speed. TRUST ME...in 6 months when you can really drive it you will be sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much happier.

I was in the same situation as you and I'm stuck with an auto now
At the time I was just barely learning how to drive and I didn't realize how valuable a 5 speed is so I didn't argue that much. Besides the extra speed, there are so many times I want control of the gears. Really try your best to convince your parents to let you get one.

Absolutely not. In my opinion any 6 cyl manual is WAY easier to learn on. Small engines take a lot more revving, a Max will move from a stop just by letting the clutch out slowly. It's nearly imposible to stall.
