I checked my ATF level today and noticed that it was low. I just bought my '96 Maxima a month ago. What brand of ATF can I use?(any kind at the store) Are there certain ones on the market that are harmful for the Max? Plus, when I add the fluid, do I just pour it down the "charging tube" a little bit at a time, until it reaches the correct level on the dipstick? I suppose it is best to add the fluid when the engine is off, correct?

Did you check your ATF with the engine on? You must do that, or else you will not obtain a correct fluid level reading. See the owners manual for the proper procedure for checking the ATF.

As for the correct type, use Dextron III or equivalent. And yes, if you add it, add it with the engine off through the ATF dipstick tube.

Hey Eric! Yes I did check my ATF with the engine on. There was barely any fluid on the dipstick at all. Thanks for your comments.
