Shift Not Smooth

I have a 99 se 5spd and the shift into 5th is not very smooth and if I shift fast it'll grind. Is there a way I can fix this?

Put synthetic fluid in your transmission and shift slower.

The only way you can get a smooth "speed" shift into 5th is if you're at ~5500rpms in 4th gear. This is because you need rpms to match torque peak going into the next gear. If you don't, get kind of a thud. Try speed shifting the 2-3 shift at 4000rpms and you'll get the thud I'm talking about. As for the grind, that doesn't surprise me because 5th is such a long and complicated shift.

The thing is I have noticed it became less smooth shifting into 5th and I use to never have the grinding problem.
