Hard shifting tranny....
Hard shifting tranny....
My '99 SE Auto"magic" (magic yea right) shifts hard as hell from 1-2 when its cold/semi warm.. then it shifts a little rough after it gets fully warm (temp. needle in the middle of the gauge)... I just had a lot of transmission work done to her back in may/june and the tranny fluid was flushed then. I have 58500 miles on her, so only about 1500 left in powertrain warranty... Any ideas on what could be causing this hard shift, and should I go ahead and take her in to the dealer to get checked out? Only problem with the dealer is that they'll charge me like 90 bux diagnostics fee if I don't have anything serviced, or whatever is wrong isnt covered under warranty...
I think it's worth the $90 diagnostic fee if the decide the tranny must be replaced.
$90 or $2400. Your call.
What work did you have done? Where was it done? Might you have a warranty issue with whoever did the work (unless you did it yourself... ;-) )
Sometimes a power flush of tranny fluid will tip the tranny over the edge if it was getting ready to fail already. Seriously, though, I'd pay the diagnostic and present them with a written notification that the tranny is acting in this way and specifically list the symptoms. Then if they say there's nothing wrong and the tranny dies shortly after the warranty expires you can prove that the problem developed while the warranty was still in force.

This is a quote from DBM:
The '99 Maxima factory service manual says that too sharp a shock in the 1-2 shift may be caused by ...
1) throttle position switch adjustment
2) transmission fluid line pressure
3) accumulator servo release
4) control valve assembly
5) ATF fluid temperature sensor
The FSM suggests these items be checked in the order specified.

I forgot to mention it also makes a little bump when I let off the gas sometimes...
I think I'll be going to the dealership very soon to get it checked out (prolly after my next paycheck...next friday.. beach trips kinda kill your checking account
) I actually had it serviced many times for the same problem... It wouldnt go into O/D so they kept replacing some solenoid pack, the car would work fine for a couple days and then go right back to skipping out of O/D... well I went to Ohio and had the car bust up on me up there..they replaced the solenoid AGAIN, and halfway home the same thing happened with the O/D... Another night Im driving along and all of a sudden i hit the gas a little and the car redlines... i come to a stop, press the gas and i just sit there. I get the car towed into my dealership (Nissan of Union City) and it turns out the Ohio Dealership left out a few bolts causing the valve body to fall out, leaving the bolts in the transmission pan.... ever since then the transmission has always had a hard 1-2 shift and little bumps when I let off the gas.

It's clear that Nissan hasn't corrected the problem and now has probably caused more damage to your transmission.
Mention the word LAWYER to them...
Hard 1st to 2nd shift
i have a much older maxima, 91 se, but i am having EXACTLY the same problem, and its making me pull my hair out nearly. when the tranny is cold, for about the first 20 minutes of driving, the first to second shift is brutal, enough to make you cry. it smooths out after driving though. my question is, did you find out what was making yours do it? or are you just living with it? i brought mine to aamco, they said to ignore it, but i dont want to do that, i want to fix it. any input would be helpful, thankyou
