you do know that HIDs will soon be iilegal (aftermarket ones) and it may be smarter for you to wait to get them at ridiculously low prices...just a thought..
Also, i LOVE those HIDs pictured, tight sh!!t

HID will be illegal? where did you hear that from? i am sticking with my hyper white bulbs.. the only way that i'll own HIDs is if it comes with me car. Knowing my luck with my car, if i buy the HID kit, something will happen, such as a front end crash.
But if my car comes with the HID, then the insurance covers it. =)

I have these nice *** looiking bulbs, some ppl actually think they are HIDs but during rain it's like driving with the lights off and the light just fades away when your over black ashpalt so that's why I want HIDs.
yes minsbang, as of aug 15 (i believe) it will be illegal to sell HIDs, thanks to the NHTSA. I believe their the ones who spearheaded the law to be passed. You can search the .org, or even try HIDforums.com, their all over that debate, theres even an online petition to stop the ban...

So if it's illegal to sell aftermarket HID's, then it would be illegal for us to be driving around with them on our cars. No thanks, don't want any hassles from the law. I'll stick to my Silverstars then and when they burn out, I'll get PIAA's. Isn't there a headlight harness upgrade kit for the 9004 so that higher wattage bulbs could be used safely?
You can easily tell aftermarket HID kits from those that were manufacturer installed with the car. Cars that were manufactured w/o HID systems have headlight reflectors which aren't intended to work with HID systems. The end-result is a very harsh beam reflection which blinds drivers in oncoming traffics. This is why HIDs are becoming illegal. Headlight housing with reflectors designed to work with HID systems creates a beam pattern that lights up the road well yet doesn't blind anyone in oncoming traffics.
I remember when these blueish bulbs first came out, cops were able to easily spot cars that had these to mimic HID equipped cars, like BMW's and Benzes. HID's emit a blueish hue as well and this will easily get their attention too, enough to check your vehicle and be able to tell if your car's year/make is HID equipped from the factory. Never under-estimate the law. Better be safe than sorry. Paying a couple of hundreds of dollars is too much to pay only to get a citation for them.

Glad somebody knows what their talking about.
Well, I'm glad I never got those aftermarket HID's. I have had my days of getting stopped by the cops for every little equipment violation on my vehicle. I don't ever want to deal with that anymore. It's obvious from this thread that there are some people who don't know this, perhaps those who never purchased one and was planning on getting one in the near future. I'm sure there are so many other things that the law has restrictions on but it never stops everyone from testing the law. Some get away with it for a long time, and some don't. I wouldn't want to even try.
Well when it comes to these sort of things, one must really make the decision to purchase, based on what they know of there own local law enforcement. Some cities don't make a big fuss over cars and there modifications, while others will Hawk and question anything that doesn't look OEM. I for one would take the chance on a purchase, because I live in a town that doesn't seem to really care what you do to your ride. So long as you don't have any extreeme colors in your headlights, or the wrong colors in your signals, your good to go. Still, i'd make the purchase knowing that technically, I can be cited for a aftermarket kit. A risk I personally don't mind taking.....in my city at least.
Honestly ok sure cops will be able to tell most HIDs kit aren't stock. Like the 8000k + which gives out a lotta color but you can always go a level down and get a 6000k with a lil tint of a blue/purple or lower which will be pure white.
Right now, in Las Vegas, where I live the law is pretty lenient. But I'll be moving back to Los Angeles, CA and the law there is way more strict. I lived my low-riding days in Hollywood, where I grew up and I remembered getting a ticket for almost everything, even got a $109 fine for having my radio too loud. I guess I ****ed the officer for shaking him and his car with bass coming from my stereo system while he was a few hundred feet infront of me.
I used to get a ticket everytime I go to old-town Pasadena for having those blue tinted headlight bulbs. It's been over 10 years since my last run-in with cops because of what's on my car and I love it! It's cool and all, getting attention from cops, when your younger. But getting attention from cops now that you are older and wiser is pretty stupid. It's even more stupid if your kid is in your car with you and you get pulled over for having an HID, or other road-illegal equipment on your vehicle.

i made my own posts, but i saw it mentioned hear too....someone gave me a link on better harnesses for brighter bulbs...but does anyone know another way...http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gte671n/mymax.html...let me know
Regretfully, most of my money then when I was younger (since I had a really good job and was living at home) went into my car. I was like those of you guys with a long list of mods done under your signature. The little money I had left, after getting all the toys and after partying, went to paying some stupid tickets. But I paid the price for being cool. But now I'd rather save the money for something more important like repair money when my transmission or engine goes out, major stuff like that. I have seen so many people spend all their money on mods only to sell them later because some big expense came up and they didn't have the money for it. The lame part about that is that you could never get back the same amount of money spent on some aftermarket mods, like wheels/tires, etc. So its almost like, you're throwing money away.

So so true.... that's the problem with modding... cold air intake..turbos...exhausts..hid etc make you stand out just for cops

HID's will not be made illegal...if anything aftermarket HIDs will be made illegal, and it's because of jerk offs that buy the 6000k+ kits. The lower you go, the closer you get to pure white light, which is why 6000k is too blue, and 8000k is too purple. So rather than just get something that serves a purpose, you have to be cool and get lights that come out purple and blue and blind the **** outta people. Fockheads.
ok, now that i'm off my soapbox: If aftermarket HIDs are made illegal, so what? How does a cop know that your car wasn't equipped with HID's when you bought it? Also, not all OEM HID's look alike. Compare a nissan's HID to a BMW HID. Since they all don't look alike, the fact that different kits will look different will be overlooked. Also, i'm willing to bet that the law will be that you can't use aftermarket HID's as your primary driving lights. Therefore, if you get a kit that fits in your foglights, or attaches to the bumper, you'll still be able to have them, they just can't be used on the road.
Before i end this, i have to step up onto the soapbox again: I beg of you people that you don't get these **** HID kits that fit into the OEM Headlights. Get a kit that mounts to your bumper, or into your foglights, etc. The reason being that the reason why people hate HID kits is because they get blinded. They get blinded because these kits do not reflect the light correctly, and instead just throw light everywhere and blind people. And people on the forums, myself included, have been saying for months that these HID kits will cause problems, and now (appearently) the DOT has decided to step in, and there's no one to blame but yourselves.

The problem lies in that people buy HID kits and use them with stock headlight housings (reflector type) that have no aim or direction to their beam pattern, thus scattering it all over the place, and blinding everyone on the road. HIDs were designed to be used in projector headlight housings and unfortunately for Maximas, there are no "Maxima projector headlight housings" available currently.
However as a precautionary measure, people can reaim their headlights lower to reduce the beam redirection from our direction-less stock housing. That does help significantly.

Dude the Kelvin rating of the HIDs has nothing to do with it. But even if it did, your argument makes no sense. Basic physics dictates that the higher up the kelvin scale you go, you go higher up on the colour spectrum, thus reducing visible brightness of the light. There is only one... maybe two kits out there that can produce a high kelvin rating AND high brightness (luminousity).

Unfortunately, i cannot find the link to the website that described all this in detail, as the org mods have deleted a lot of links from the org homepage. But, there was a site that described in detail how the lower you go on the kelvin scale, the closer you get to pure white light, and how a kit with an overall lower kelvin rating would produce better results than one with a higher kelvin rating.

Because:
DOT is banning HID kits
Why?
Because people are being blinded
Why?
Because people are installing HID kits and not re-aiming them so that they don't blind other drivers
So do you see any reason why these people are not to blame for HID kits being banned? Also, it's a lot easier to put
in like, you're saying "me too" rather than make a point. Why don't you bring something worthwhile to the discussion instead of riding the point that someone else made?
Well, I'm the one that has been in this discussion since the beginning of the post but anyway yes some people are ignorant and won't reaim their headlights and screw it up for the rest of us. I'm not saying they should totally ban aftermarket HIDs, but they should just have a sticter law for people that abuse HIDs.

Ok, let's clarify something: Let's look at some past posts of reviews of HID kits, and see how people describe the 8000k kits as having a purplish hue to it, and how the 6000k kit is described as having a blue tint to it. Next, look at the kelvin ratings of some OEM kits by various manufacturers: they're all in the 3000-4500k range. Now, compare the whiteness and brightness/luminousity of an OEM kit to an aftermarket kit. See how the OEM kit puts out WHITE light, while the aftermarket kit puts out a little white light with a lot of colored glare due to the fact that it's too high on the kelvin scale and is not aimed properly.

The higher kelvin ratings put out blue/purple light which have a longer wavelength and hence are not as 'soothing' as the lower kelvin bulbs, which makes it more bothersome for other drivers on the road.
In the end, if you had the right housing, to go with any HID kit, it would not be a problem. Heck the BMW X5 would have the most annoying lights on the planet if they didn't have the awesome housings to focus the light.
