Rear brake replacement

Rear brake replacement

Hey guys,
Anyone have any instructions on replacing the rear brakes on my 97 max. Also where should i get the pads from? can i get OEM parts from some where else cheaper other then the dealer?

Get a haynes manual to help you with the install. But if you ever have done the front it is similar to the back except that the piston has too be twisted (clockwise I believe) and pushed in at the same time. Special tools are made for this to make it easier ( I borrowed one) but needle nose pliers can also be used. I replaced my rear brakes with Raybestos Quiet Stop pads, they seem like they are pretty good pads, they don't fade under hard braking and there is little dust.

Use alot of silicone spray on the boots of the piston so they don't twist when turning in the piston and rip. Spend the extra $ on the disc brake tool found at any auto parts store. The pliers slip off too easy and tick you BAD.

thanks guys! I have the chilton manual, but i wanted to get all the advice i can before i do this cause this will be my first time. What tools will i need besides the piston turning tool? What is that metallic looking fluid that nissan applys when installing the pads? where do i apply it and how much of it?

10mm socket
12 or 14mm socket

The metalic looking stuff is an anti squeal agent thats applied between the shims and pads. You can also use anti-sieze, it's the same thing.

Be sure to take the guide pins out and clean and relube them. The guide pins are what the caliper bolts onto.

quick question. This maxdriver.com mentions removing the hand brake springs...does this have to be done? no one else mentioned this to me.

HERE IS THE WRITEUP FROM MAXDRIVER.COM

1 jack up rear of car, remove wheel. make sure EBRAKE is OFF.

2
this will be a bit tricky. remove the SPRING holding the ebrake lever in with tweezers.

3 remove the 14mm bolts holding in the piston from the caliper.

4 pull back on the lever that is holding the ebrake in (it's a line with a big *** hook) and remove the ebrake from the caliper.. so the whole thing is now loose and easy to move. there is a metal clip holding the ebrake cable in place, pop that out.

5 remove the stock pads, and remove the steel brackets that are one them. NOTE which side is in front and which pad is in back. CLEAN the brackets with brake clearner and hose down the caliper/piston with brake cleaner. scrub off all the crap on them, to reduce squeeling... transfer the brackets to the new pads. and put the new pads in the slots.

6 using plyers. TURN clockwise the piston to push it back into the caliper, so u can make it flush. this way, you'll have an easier time to push the piston back onto the new brake pads.

7 Putt the piston back onto the caliper, and tighten the 2 14mm bolts.

8 rehook the ebrake cable to the caliper and it's clip

9 reattach the spring that you took off.

10 tighten everything down. repeat to other side.

yes i think the hand brake springs will have to be taken off. just take a socket and turn the part that the spring sits on, you have to apply a fair amount of force. the spring will come off once you've turned it enough.
