Why y pipes?

Hi all,

I'm new to the list and just off warrenty (1999 ES) and am considering modifying my Maxima. Lots of talk about "Y" pipes here? Is this mod made primarily for better performance, or better sound? From what I've picked up on, a y-pipe eliminates a pre-cat? Do you retain the rest of the stock exhaust? And most importantly, what sound are we going for here? My Maxima is VERY quiet at all speeds and though I'd like a bit more sound and a deeper growl, I certainly don't want the sound the kids in the Hondas get with big pipes!

And finally, any before and after sound clips of the y-pipe mod only?

With stock catback you will barely notice the exhaust. There will be a more throaty sound but yet very low.

Any the y pipe will create noticable horsepower gains. I think it's like 10-15 horses.

I think the biggest source of noise increase when installing an aftermarket y pipe is exhaust leaks due to sloppy installation.
