92+.

I personally won't run 91.

Enjoy your Max!

yep i'd recommend at least premium 93....or sunoco ultra 94(which is a total ripoff in my opinion)...if u get anything less than 91-92 then u can get engine knock and it affects your vehicle's overall perfomance...it'll be more sluggish.....its funny b/c in certain European countries, gas can be well over 100 octane and even up to 110 octane in order to handle those ultra high performance foreign muscle cars. ppl that drive those cars scoff at our wimpy 93 "premium" or 94 "ultra" octane. but on the downside, gas is well over $2 a gallon and has even reached $3 a gallon in some spots over there. just thought y'all would like to know some useless, semi-interesting info that is my $0.02!

Yeah over here gas is 1.80 for 93, so it's not that bad. But even if it was 3.00 a gallon, I would still pay it for the Max.

Here I go again...

The deal is this. Octane prevents detonation/knock...it actually makes the gas LESS likely to explode as a result of heat and pressure. If you use gas that does not have enough octane in it, it will cause detonation/knock. In order to prevent the knock from destroying your engine, the ECU retards the timing. This works, but the problem is that retarding the timing will result in worse fuel economy and less power. I have read that the factory engineers tend to be conservative in their estimates, so whatever the manual recommends (91 octane in this case) is fine to use. Using gas with more octane will not hurt, but is a waste of money...

That said, I ONLY put Ultra 94 in my 98 SE. I am happy to waste my money. Although, those pictures on motorvate make me think 94 might have some extra detyergents or something...

Yes it is, but isn't talking about again and again more fun?!?!?

91 is recommended.

I will not run lower than that again... I did once and my knock sensor and O2 sensors went off... I put in 92 and reset the computer. No sensors have gone off since.

92 from sunoco baby!

i'm averaging 8.5 L/100 over any tank i use.
(about 750 km / tank easy, and that's AVERAGE)
(and though I do often drive relaxed, that includes frequent runs of over 200kmph)

dave h.

yes... i know i shouldn't run my tank that low...

wow look what a good question i asked, keeps everyone busy.

the 1st owner of my max said that he put 89 octane in the max and it has 24k thousand miles on it. imma have to put 92+ in it from now on but one question, do i need to go to gas stations like 76? mobile? or what to get 92+ octane, or do all gas stations have 92+? and how would i know what the octane # is just by looking? and which gas station do you guys recommend the most ? 76? mobile or shell? or is arco's 92+ octate good enuf ( if they have any).

I know i sound very newbie and i am a newbie. b4 i got my max, i had an altima and i used to put the cheapest gas in it and try to save my broke *** some money. now that all the money is saved and my max is purchased, i like to feed my baby with the best. and yes im only 19 so u know that i dont have much experience

Have you been to a gas station? All gas stations have 91+ (it's called Premium). You can tell by looking at the number on the pump. Some gas stations have 3 different hoses (here in Illinois they have it for 87, 89, and 93 octane) and some have 1 hose and you select the octane level you want. It'll show you your octane choices at the pump I use Shell since there is no Sunoco/Chevron here

Up here in MN not all gas stations have 91. There is one close to my house that has 91 so thats ussually what i get. If I want 92+ I got look around. plus it doesn't help that my town was recently crowned the highest gas prices in MN
oh well at least one of us gets to eat well

I switch between sunoco 94 and 93 Car runs very smooth on 94, 93 is .10 cheaper and I don't feel ant diffenrece in smoothness or accel.

you are all very lucky. i run 91 because in oklahoma it's the highest you can get.....well, we have 1 texaco that has 93 but they exploit the hell out of that fact by charging about 30 cents more per gallon.

I always buy 93 supreme @ Chevron. Nice to be in Texas, price increase is only about 5 cents per grade. Paid $1.49/Gallon today.

In Chicago, 93 is like $1.89-$1.99/gal and in the suburbs around Chicago it's like $1.69-$1.85/gal. I use Shell so they always have they're "new formula" like 5-10 cents higher than other stations.

Maybe my high school metric to standard conversion skills are rusty, but isn't a litre about the same as a quart? So 4 would make a gallon. That is real close to $4.00/gallon. For some readon the $1.61 I just paid seems pretty good.

Chillinmax, are you using distilled water? Tap water might have impurities that'll clog your fuel filter. I get the most power from water distilled in Arkansas.

Excellent math skills

1 litre = 1.05 quarts
1 quart = .25 gallons
.25 gallons x 4 = 1 gallon
$4.00CDN = approx $2.90US/gallon

Outrageous

The reason you can't get as high octane in some parts of the country, so I have been told, is due to high elevation. I beleive the thinner air tends to make detonation less likely, therefore requiring less octane. I would say that if 91 is all you can get, you're probably more than fine for your area.

until recently i have been using 89 octane. I just switched to 91 highest around here without using octane booster, it's kind of a rip-off @ 2.39 a gallon here in northern cali, but my max seems to thank me for it. better gas mileage and seems to breathe a little easier. I'm gonna stick withit from now on eve with the price.

Does that include the KY? And do they have the common courtesy of giving you a reach around?

I thought $1.65 for 93 was getting bad (note to self: Do not move to northern Cali).

83 octane runs in about ever gas station around here in austin, texas. I only buy Chevron with Techron to keep my engine and fuel injectors clean (all major US car companies use Chevron with Techron to get their top mpg ratings posted by the EPA). I shop all the Chevron stations for a couple of days and wait for a good deal, but it doesn't vary much. I bought for $1.61 today. Two weeks ago I bought it for $1.49!! I want my gas prices back; I'm a poor college kid... I thought that was the only good thing about this war; where's my oil?!??
