Brakes --- cost?

I brought my 99 GLE into Datsan Dynamics in Vienna, VA today.

The mechanic told me my rears have 1/16 and fronts are 1/8.

He told me it will take 3 hours to do the front and 2.9 hours to do the back, and that includes turning the rotors. He said they have a machine to turn the rotors on the car itself, and that does a better job.

Am I getting snowed on the labor for this work?

It doesnt take 6 hours to change brakes, unless they're morons who've never seen brakes before but thats my opinion. Its not that hard to do it yourself if you got the time. Or find someone you know who can do it or go someplace else and get another quote.

Re: Brakes --- cost?

I changed my brake front pads in 15 minutes. Granted, I didn't turn the rotors but he won't either. At least, if he does it will be done on the car by a machine that he can just walk away from.

Brakes are brakes.... take it to Midas or some chain auto repair place. Don't take it to Pep Boys!!! (They suck for service)

changing the brake pads are easy. i do know that turning the rotors while they are still on the car is much better. but you can take the rotors to a shop and have them turn them and change the pads yourself.

check out franks site for more info and help.

That's way too long for brakes. If you have a place to work, do yourself a favor and do it yourself.

I go to Autozone with $150 and walk out with new rotors/pads/hardware/quiet stop.

It takes me probably 10 minutes to do each brake if I take my time. If I were at a shop with a lift, I could probably get the whole damn job done in 30 minutes.

It's an easy job that's hard to mess up.
