rotton eggs smell....is cat going? or is this normal?

I have been noticing lately that after some extended periods of driving, I get the rotton egg smell once in a while. Does this mean my cat is dying, or is it something else? Is this something to worry about? Is the cat covered in the Nissan warrenty?

Thanks
Phil

It is the cat doing its job. Either a large chunk of the catalyst just got exposed, or it somehow broke loose a chunk of catalyzed material. Inless you have a rattling in your cat, things are working properly. That smell is not an indication of a problem unless accompanied by noise or substantial loss of power.

Thanks. I will be listening for any rattling in that area. I hope this is covered under the Nissan ASP warrenty.

i noticed it happens more when i use gas from texaco than anything. But, yeah, i've got the smae thing.....i've had my cat checked and everything, and it's all fine, it just causes that nasty smell every once in a while.

The catalytic converter converts waste gasses to make them more environmentally safe form to be released back into the atmosphere. More pollution = more catalyst being used up, therefore more smell. Other factors (A/F ratio, fuel consumption, combustion of fuel) can cause variances in the amount of catalyst used, and therefore in the amount of sulfuric smells produced.
