How do you know if your engine mounts are shot?

There is a knocking sound coming from my front end under the engine. It is most noticable when I am driving slow or coming to a stop. I just replaced my knock sensor and cleaned my EVAP control valve. My mechanic checked it out and couldn't find anything wrong. My CEL is not on or throwing any codes. What could it be?

I have something very similiar and I found an article that describes exactly what mine is doing to a T. Check out this link and see if this might apply to you. From what you have described it does.

That crossed my mind. My whole front suspension was redone with new components last winter though. Could it be shot already?

Try to bounce the front end and see if the noise is coming from the strut/spring assembly or from the lower suspension components. Personally, I doubt that your mounts are shot. If you look at them from under the car, you will be able to tell somewhat whether they are torn or not. After 90k miles and 8 years, my mounts on my 95 were still intact (although when replaced with poly-filled mounts, the difference was instantly appreciable!). Lower suspension noise? axle, FSB, FSB endlinks, ball joints, control arm bushings, tie rods/steering components, wheel bearings.
