Learning Transmission?

Does the 4th gen Max have a learning transmission? I.E. Does it learn the drivers habits and change the shift Program? Thanks.

yes to a point, after driving mine for 6months with my driving style, the tranny would shift much quicker and firmer going into second. i usually shift into second between 3-3.5k rpm

on a side note i dont really know this for a fact

the ECU learns and adjusts constantly...but it doesnt have a shift program that varies and changes (no sport/normal mode, etc) it just depends how u drive it

either way neither trans learns anything, its the ecu that does the learning, and its unrealistic to think that it learns and stores anything because the ecu is always learning anyways, now if u almost ALWAYS drive one style and then change it up one time, ur car may drive different because the ecu has to re adjust to the new driving style

The ECU (engine control unit) and the TCU (transmission control unit) are two completely different devices. They do talk to each other but operate independently.

The TCU does not learn, it runs fixed shift patterns depending on vehicle speed, throttle position & engine RPM.

You can thank Nissan Engineering for setting up that logic. Drives me nuts to be in 3rd gear at 5mph.. WTF?

it basically has fuel efficiency on the brain...instantly shifts up constantly

i think the process is backwards....

after 6 months of driving, the DRIVER learns how the car shifts so eventually it feels natural

I and my gf has the same car, 97 Maxima. The difference is, hers is an SE, and mine is a GXE. Her car shifts perfect, and it also holds to each gear longer (no 3rd gear at 5mph, like mine and apparently...njmaxseltd's as well).

Sometimes I give my gf to drive my car....and I don't know whether it's just me, but the tranny behaves much better (i.e. holding to each gear longer, and no OD at lower speed).
