What does the orange spacer do?

When I changed out my stock suspension to KYB GR-2 struts, SE Springs, and KYB dustboots, I noticed the orange spacers on both my front struts were totally destroyed. I didn't have replacement so I didn't put any on my new struts. I'll possibly be changing the springs next week to H&R's and it would be a good opp to add them if need be. What is the purpose of these spacers anyway and do I really need them with the KYB dustboot?

Go to any auto parts store and buy a piece of hedder gasket paper. They sell it in 8x10 sheets for about 12 bucks. It's nice thick stuff. Then get to work and make new gaskets for both the front and the rears.

The part I thought I was describing is not the part you guys are speaking about. On my stock struts the orange piece was actually on the strut shaft itself and was made up of some sort of foam material. Kinda looked like a small orange donut. This part was only on the front struts and it sat underneath the dustboot on the shaft.

They are bump stops. they protect you from bottoming out and damaging your suspention and/or car.
