EGR Code & Check engine light on?
EGR Code & Check engine light on...HELP?
I'm brand new to this forum. The car is a 95 GLE and is completely stock with 103,300 miles. Now, I'm a frequent poster on LS1tech.com cause I'm a Camaro guy too. This car is my dependable sales vehicle.
I don't have an ODB I tool to check the code but have taken it to a shop and they said it's got and EGR System code. They turned of the light and it comes back on in a few days. They told me its probably a clogged (carbon) EGR tube on the intake. Is there any easy way to fix this w/o taking off the intake to clean the tube? I just can't live with the check engine light on all the time.
The car is very well maintained. Please help.

i would imagine just spraying cleaner into it would push all the gunk back INTO the system. which tube is the EGR? Is that the egr port on the headers? so in theory that would push crud into the headers and y pipe? i dont see any problem with that, it would just get burnt off. someone please confirm

well i was reading the forum about the new headers by nashua, and he said he needed to add the EGR port to the headers... figured it was the same one, but i could be confused. let me look in the haynes and chilton manuals, and i will post again later if i find something
SXN - FWIW, my car is completley stock, no headers.
Thanks. Jim

You can remove the EGR if you have the time. Instructions are in the Haynes manual, and I've done mine. You'll need to remove all of the stock intake plastic stuff to get near it. I had the throttle body removed, too, but can't remember if it was absolutely necessary (but did make it easier). It's not hard work, just a little time consuming (few hours) with the right tools.
Don't spray any cleaner in the EGR valve. There is a rubber diaphragm (or whatever soft material) in there that can be damaged by a cleaner. The Haynes manual even stressed that. The ports for the EGR can be cleaned by picking the carbon off with small, sharp tools, being careful not to gouge the mating surface. The tubes can be blown out with carb/tb cleaner safely. Don't forget about the gaskets, as they may stick to the engine and you won't see them.

Pull your own code and find out exactly what it's pointing to before you start ripping apart the EGR system. There are many components of the EGR system including vacuum actuators and sensors. What exact code did your mechanic pull from your ECU?
this carbon build up does mess with your gas maileage and performance, I had a new throbble body postinoning sensor put in and they cleaned my all of the carbon out and it made pretty good difference.
