Alternator Nut Falling Off!!!

This might sound dumb, but one day I was just pulling out of my driveway and I heard a clunk from under the hood and the battery charge indicator goes on immediately. I stop, look under the hood, and there's the alternator belt and pully sitting there. The pulley was off the threaded alternator shaft and just sitting there, nut nowhere to be found (btw belt was in good shape). Has this happened to anyone ?

I did have the alternator replaced about 2 years back, but it should have failed sooner if the mechanic mis-installed it. Anyway, does anyone know the size of this nut ? Is it something special or would a standard nut work ?

Thanks,
Dar

When you purchase the alternator the pulley comes complete with it. Can't you just get an alternator from a junkyard to get the nut you need?

as you lost a nut... happens to the best of us i dont know the size or your nut (thankfully ), but i dont believe its a special nut. Just try and torque it to specs this time, and maybe some thread lock...enough about nuts

That's why I do the work myself, I know my nuts won't be falling off.
This is the best post I've seen in a long time.

Thanks for all the advice... and the laugh
I'll get a nut from the wreckers, and torque to spec.

Well, I found the real problem. The genious who replaced my alternator previously used the wrong size nut!!. Just goes to show you, be careful if you let others handle your nuts
(Sorry, couldn't resist)
