How do you know if you have a CA spec car or not?

The original owner told me he bought it in CA, so I always assumed it was a CA spec car. But when I looked at custom maxima.com's diagram, it seemed to indicate a fed spec? But then again, custom maxima only has the cali emissions pipes for 99-01 cars. Are they showing the gen 5 engine in the diagram? It looks different than the engine in my 95 se auto. I think I saw here, a long time ago, some way to tell by looking at the vin number? Is there a way to do that?

found the info for you man ! in faqs

Raise your hood. Look for a shiny metal identification tag fastened to the passenger side of firewall. The top row is the Vehicle Identification Number, starting with J. The second row is model information. The first five characters are BLHUL. The 12th character is the destination:

N = Canada
V = California
U = US, not California

Thanks. I'd looked in the faqs, but didn't see it. It's poorly organized. In the table of contents, it's got pg 1.... and list all this stuff under it, then pg 2, list stuff under that, and pg 3, same thing. but there's 4 pages, not just 3, so it's all mixed up and it's hard to find stuff.

They make less power? I always suspected they did because of the tighter emissions, but never read anything to confirm it.
