brake problem... and I think my mechanic is retarded.
I posted probably about a week ago about a noise I had coming from my brakes, but rather than bump an old thread, I figured I'd make this one as a sort of follow up... I have a little bit of a different problem this time, anyway.
when I let my foot off the brake (especially from a stand-still when the car hasn't moved in about a minute or more), I get this horrible noise. it's a loud, low pitched rubbing sound, sometimes more intense than other times. at it's worst, it vibrates through the suspension and I can even feel it through the seats. it comes from the rear passenger side and front driver's side, mostly... but with all that noise it can be hard to tell sometimes. the noise speeds up as the wheels spin faster, and stops after ~40 mph.
here's the interesting part though: (hold on to your seats...)
I just got new brakes/rotors in the front, and the rotors cut in the back... but none of my brakes currently have shims.
I questioned my mechanic about it, and he told me that the brakes "don't require shims"... but I'm thinking that the lack of shims is what's causing the noise, because there's nothing absorbing vibration between pad and rotor.
anyone have any input? should I go and tell my mechanic to just put the damn shims on?
thanks.

I used to have horrible brake sounds from the passenger rear, i found it was a combination of A. needing new pads, B. needing new rotor, and C. needing new caliper bracket because the guiding pin had "froze" and would not budge at all.

The noise you describe does not sound like it's caused by the lack of shims.
Have your brakes checked by another mechanic.
You can pick up a new shim kit from Nissan for about $20 bucks and have them installed or do it yourself. It's very easy to do.

here is the instruction to disassemble your brakes for additional resource >> http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/300
good luck!

went back to the shop today, and they resurfaced my rear rotors.
this made the noise a lot less frequent, and it's actually tolerable to drive... but I'm still hearing it when I apply light pressure to the brakes.
I'm gonna try to wear it in for a couple of days to see if it stops. if not, I'll have them try to resurface one more time. if that doesn't stop the rubbing completely, I'll just spend the cash and replace the rotors all together, I guess.

My gf's civic has the same problem, she just got her brakes replaced at hibdons and it only squeaks when she applies her brakes lightly, i looked at the rotors and they are fine. So the only thing i can think of is that they are poor quality brake pads. You might wanna find out what kind of pads he put on. Just a thought

thanks though.
Noise or vibration after the brake pedal has been released is typically not because of rotor. Check to make sure the pads are not pressed against the rotor. Here are a few potential trouble spots: 1/ Caliper pins frozen or somewhat sticky (note: Do not over grease or you will have other problems). 2/ Pad sliding surfaces are corroded. 3/ Piston is seized. 4/ Emergency brake cable not fully released. Note: There is a known problem with 4th gen Maxima (TSB?) Check to make sure the lever on the rear caliper rested against the post when the e-brake is released. 5/ The inside rear pad not fully seat against the piston. Make sure the nub on the back of the pad is aligned with the cut out on the piston surface. 6/ Pinched brake hose (or clogged brake hose).
