MAX SPEED - Can AUTO MAX pass 124MPH??
I have a 96 automatic maxima, practically stock, and today on i95 i was following a diamante going 110, then he spead up, and to catch up i floored it, I went 124, and it seemed like it just stayed there, it maybe slowly went up, but hardly! is that the limiter? i was at 4,000 rpms roughly! Myabe i could have gone faster, i only stayed like that for like 3 seconds..... didnt notice much if any change??
same here
i had the same thing happen to me. i believe its the ecu on the GXE models that limit the speed. something about the wheels and tires package on those models. pretty much seems stop acceleration. i hate it sooo much. could i possibly swap an ecu out of a SE and will it work? The SE doesn't have the governor on it right?
When you car is limited electronically, most cases the spark is cut from 1 or more cylinders (feels like its running out of gas)..
If you were just hanging at 124 and couldn't increase speed, thats all you have, limited by drag.

Me too!!!
On I-95 racing a SHO at full throttle as soon as it hit 125@5200rpm the car just cut off and slowed to 120 then it took off again. That happened about three times in that one occation

Speed Stuff
- Here's the deal... As far as I know, the only limiter that Nissan installed keeps the speed to around 112mph. So the 120ish speeds seem like typical speedometer miscalibration. Speedos aren't even accurate at highway speeds, let alone anything above 100. So your limiter cutting in was probably at 112.
- Also, the drag has nothing to do with it. The Maxima's got a really sweet drag coefficient of .32 or something close. (That's one reason why the car is so quiet at speed). Plus, the power doesn't die until 5000rpm, so a loss at 4000 means electronic intervention.
- Some people have swapped SE ECU's into their GXE's with success - but I don't know how safe the process is.

i have a 95 GXE with S/C package. When i was bone stock the Max would go about 133 while driving I5 down to LA...took a long time for it to creep up to that speed.
My '95se auto
will do high 130's/low 140's... trust me I would know, and also the spedometer is accurate in mine for 2 reasons. First of all, the easiest way is to go exactly 60mph and watch milemarkers, and calculate it that way... if there is any error (mine goes 1 mile at EXACTLY 1 minute at 60mph... go figure hehe) the percentage will be the same at higher speeds, so if it is off by 2mph at 60, it will be off by 4 at 130. Anyways... my 2nd way of knowing that my spedometer is accurate is I have been clocked and pulled over cruising at 130... I still had plenty of pull left, but I wasn't racing and didn't want my car running its hardest (140ish... 142 may be the top speed, something like that
Oh yeah, that is bone stock too - now I have intake and haven't been out to see if that will increase anything, honestly after my 1st ticket I am just too scared now - my license is still on probation by law 4 months later, if I dont make a fullstop at a stopsign I lose my license
so I am trying to watch out - life still has its fun though...

I wonder why a lot of you with the security and convenience package or only getting to about the low and mid 120's cause I have owned a 96 gxe with the s/c package and it got up to about 138 and I didnt even push it and further than that cause it get scarier than **** at that speed with stock suspension and also my current max is a 99 gxe with the s/c package and I have gotten it up to 135 and again still have tried to top it out. From what I thought I knew, was that all gxe's with the security and convenience package didnt have a limiter but after hearing a lot of these posts maybe not. Also I dont know if I got a higher special model of gxe but I also had wood trim in my car too and I know I have never seen a gxe with woodtrim before. Its not after market either its the factory trim.

I passed 130
I took my 97 GLE up to 132 on the LIE with 3 other maximas... the only reason i couldfind the cut off mph is because we flew by 4 suffolk county cop cars and slowed it down to 125... even if they wanted to take off they would have never caught us.
Costco, that was the original question of the post. It seems as though the SEs and GLEs don't have them. I know that I have hit 140 once with my GLE and other everyone else that has a GLE states that they have hit at least 130. So if you have a GLE, then lets say, no, you don't have the limiter. Test it if you feel comfortable. BTW, did you know that 2000 and 2001 Ford PowerStroke TurboDiesels flash the seatbelt warning light and make a boing sound over 100 MPH? Ask me how I know.

The GXE'S with the comfort/convenience package don't have the limiters. So GLE'S, SE'S, AND GXE'S with the package all can get to around 135-140 with patience, stock. With mods, maybe 140+.

That's probably it...if it was the limiter, then the car would have given you a noticible drop in speed and RPM...accelerating from 115+ can take some time...

Some people said when u max it out, your car will slow down and rpm will drop! that never happened to me, so maybe that wasnt my max, it was just that i didnt give it enough time to climb up, and its slow when u goin that fast to climb! is that it?

I have a 98 GXE without s/c package and i drove my car upto and over 130+ mph. It takes alot longer if you turn on your OD (overdrive). I usually leave it off untill i start getting close to redline and turn it on. I've got some crazy friends that drive fast but not stupid on our one and only Highway 30. Unless the only reason my car gets up to that speed is the fresh air we have here in Hawaii. LOL!!!
