My first Mod maybe a y-pipe?

i just got my 1999 maxima gle ladt month and i wanna start hooking it up and i saw that a y-pipe gives you a good amount of horse -power like warpspeeds y pipe, so ive been thinking of buyen it but i just wanna know if it is okay if i buy one and if i need some thing else first before i buy one. I dont want to buy one and find out its not gonna work good without a _____. so if any1 can give me some info if its okay to buy a y-pipe as my first mod?sd

a Y-Pipe was my first mod as well.

Verify if you care is fed or cali spec prior to purchasing the Y-Pipe - you should not really *need* any additional parts to install it. Ask the place you buy the Y from if it comes w/ all the necessary gaskets. When you install, put anti-seize on the O2 sensor threads.

An intake w/ better flow properties will help take advantage of what the Y-Pipe has to offer. Have fun looking at page after page of 'Best Intake Type' debate!

Y-pipe is a great first mod...
I went with a Budget Y-pipe, it's the best bang for your buck. And it does the same as any other y-pipe out there.

My First mod was my Place racing CAI, which i noticed instant gains.
I am just now Adding my Y-pipe (warpspeed) Which is the second most thing you can do to add hp.

I recommend buying a Cold Air Intake First...
Reason
You get just as much HP as a Y-pipe, accept CAI provides your maxima with a Beautiful Growling sound when WOT(Wide Open Throttle) It makes your maxima sound like it has a monster under the hood.

Check out my thread about which Y-pipe is the best to get if you decided on a Y-pipe any how, though i really do suggest buying an Injen CAI first.

My Place Racing CAI:

if you have 3 02 sensors then you are fed. if you have 4 then you are cali. pop the hood and check right in front of the engine.

Which do you want more? Looks? or Speed? If i were you I'd do the Y-pipe and Injen CAI. Thats about $430.00. If you want rims, goto www.WheelMax.com
They sell Wheels & Tires MAD CHEAP!

Don't remember where it is in the VIN but the vin tells you what you are fed or cali. I personally would go intake first, then y. Or get them both at the same time.

Well, what are your plans with the Max? Show or go? Since you have a GLE, your going to be limited to performance when you don't have a manual transmission. You can go and spend all your hard-earned money on performance intakes like Injen and Place Racing, but for what, like 4 horses? And the y-pipe, what like 7 horses? If your going for performance, your 1st mod should be a 5-speed swap, if your mechanically inclined, you should spend no more than a few hundreds and that 5-speed swap is altogether better than a y-pipe/intake/underdrive pulley/cat-back exhaust on an automatic Max. If you can't do it, look about spending $1000 on parts and labor, but that's up to you to decide if performance is what your looking for. If you decide to just skip the swap, yes an aluminized Warpspeed y-pipe is a good choice. Since you don't have the stock fog lights, a Place Racing intake would be cool, but I prefer the Place Racing intake without the cold air extension, for peformance, that is the best setup intake-wise. Those mods alone should give you somewhat noticeable gains, but like I always say, naturally-aspirated performance is for the weak, boosted is the way to go. Oh yea, and depending on the number of plugs in front of your valve cover could determine if you have a cali-spec.

Raise your hood. Look for a shiny metal identification tag fastened to the passenger side of firewall. The top row is the Vehicle Identification Number, starting with J. The second row is model information. The first five characters are BLHUL. The 12th character is the destination:

N = Canada
V = California
U = US, not California

You will feel it especially if they are both installed at the same time to feel difference from stock. It might not be much, but there is an improvement. Those are the 1st 2 naturally-aspirated mods to get, best bang for the buck.

Cripes, USDM-A32 where are you getting this information? A few hundred for a 5 speed swap if you're mechanically inclined? Seeing as how most transmissions go for $500+ alone, you're looking at a HELL of a lot more than a "few". Clutch? There's a "few" hundred as well. I'm not even going to get into the little parts like trim, pedals, etc.

The intake should give 3-6 horsepower, the Y-pipe will give 12-18 on average. The y-pipe was my first mod, followed by an intake and rear sway bar, and other than the supercharger, they were by far the most noticeable.

I just installed my Y-pipe from warpseed, I haven't noticed that mnuch of differnce to tell you the truth. I noticed more of a drmtic difference with my PR CAI. But, i heard that i have to wait for my Y-pipe to set in... Well, see on my 60 mile trip home. will repost after and let you know. There are bees in a can unlike warpseed says... Dont listen to anybody they always have bees in a can, "i'm pretty sure."

I see, then show the link to the pic on the server and not to the page that contains this pic. It's the part where second http address starts.

Xopton, I really do suggest you getting a Injen CAI first. You get the most power out of an CAI. I just Installed my Warpspeed Y-pipe yesterday, and it has settled in yesterday. The only time you notice power from a Y-pipe is Mid-High Range thats 3500rmps -6000rpms, it doesn't give you pick up.

Also, will installing y-pipe cause check engine light to come on if that is the only performance mod? If so, what do I need to do?

My budget Y-pipe came with all gaskets (although they're not nissan ones). The y-pipe removes all pre-cats and therefore isn't emissions legal (however, you SHOULD pass emission with it, depending on if they do a visual). And no, shouldn't get check engine lights either.

I didn't end up getting a y-pipe from Budget, but bought a stillen one from maximumpower96. He recommended to just get new gaskets and stuff. Do you think I should and if so, where would be a good place to get them? NAPA? what do I ask for?
Thanks for your comments...

I think he said SWAP, meaning if someone will trade tranny for tranny. Then there's no (low) parts cost.
