hard shifting

I have a 98 GXE 5 speed. Recently it has been harder to get the car to go into gear....it does not slide into gear as easy as it used to. I am thinking I need to change my gear oil. I am just wondering if anyone thinks this is my problem too or could it be something else. I am not having problems keeping it in gear, but when shifting gears its harder to get it into gear. Thanks for your help.
Carson

*I have never changed my gear oil, and have no clue when it was changed last...if ever. I bought the Max with 90K and now I have 116K.

Also I have a Pace Setter STS

Have exactly same problem, hard gettying it into first and sometimes impossible into reverse (have to go through all gears to make it go to Reverse). Will changing oil resolve this problem, or at least make things better. Really cannot afford another transmission now.

Come on Maxima veterans, give hand here to some folks!!!

P.S. I have 98,600 miles.

Changing gear oil is pretty cheap and easy. For me, it really made it easier to slide into gear, especially from 1st to 2nd. But also, I don't think I was having a difficult time getting into gear before changing the oil...it just made it much smoother.

If you do change use a GL-4 grade.

I had this issue, and flushing/refilling with Redline MT-90 did make a differance. Getting into 1st while rolling is simple now; I used to have to wait for a dead stop to drop it into 1st (think stop signs etc). Getting into gear from a cold start is still kind of tough, though it is much better then before. I found revving the engine then trying to get into reverse will let it slip right in.

Anyway, definately change your gear oil. Shifts are much smoother, and I can't remember the last time I grinded 3rd.
