Ignition "over-starting" - i.e., turning over too much

My 89 Maxima seem to be "over-starting" -- that is, when I turn the key to start the car, the starter cranks, the car starts, AND the starter seem to over-crank a bit even after the car is started. The car makes a sound that is equivalent to what you would hear if you turned the ignition key while a car is already started.

Does anyone have any ideas regarding what this could be and how I would go about diagnosing/confirming that a given idea might be correct.

Thanks

sounds like you have the same prob. i had. the starter solinoid is stuck in the start position and will not properly retract after the car has started. i took my starter apart and cleaned it... and regreased it... works like a charm now

yup..its your starter..the grease in the starter had probably dried up in the last 10 years..so just take the starter apart and regrease it and it should be worken fine

Mine has a rattle/gear-grinding kind of noise at the same time. Isn't the starter noise way more high pitch? This is low-pitch, and I'm really concerned!
