Transmission replacement Question - (5-speed)

OK,

Going to be putting a remanufactured 5-speed in my car soon.

I called my Nissan OEM parts source & they informed me that there is no "transmission gasket" per se, for when the transmission is removed & replaced.

(Makes sense I guess, since I don't see the edges of an old gasket in there now).

MY QUESTION:

Should you use a sealer like "Form-A-Gasket" on the mating surfaces (bellhousing/engine block) when re-installing? -Or is this not done?

Also, I ordered two axle seals (L&R) for the new tranny - will I need any other seal/gasket parts to do this job? (I've heard people mention the "rear-main seal," before, but not sure if this is something I need to worry about.

Thanks in advance,

-K-

No, there is no seal between the tranny and the engine. There is no fluid that it needs to retain. As a matter of fact, there is normally vent holes.

No gasket, no seal.

You sure about that? My tranny has fluid in it - I don't know about yours. I'm sure about this because I'm sure about this, but also because it's leaking all over my driveway right now.

no no, you use Permatex gray sealer for the tranny HALVES.

There is no gasket or sealant for the tranny to engine.

Ok, I'm a dumbazz on this one - so, to clarify, theres a sealing/mating surface inside the bellhousing that's separate from the bellhousing? -And that is where the gear oil is contained? So, the inside surface of the bellhousing itself is dry?

Pleeeze clear this up for me.

Wow, you learn something new everyday!

Oh, and what about the rear main seal?

TIA,

yes, the whole tranny is 2 pieces together- one half is the bell housing part that bolts to the engine and the other half is the part that contains the gear sets and fluid-thats where you want to use permatex gray to seal those 2 halves together.

The bell housing half is what contains the clutch assembly and is completely dry in there so theres no need for a gasket. Yout bolt that to the engine dry.
