Rear Brake Piston Problem

I am changing the pads and rotor and need to push the rear diver's side piston back in. I have the special tool, how long does it usually take to turn it back in, I am turning it clockwise but it's not going any further in. Any suggestions, my arm is getting kind of tired...

Thanks.

If my memory serves me right, each turn will move the piston back in the caliper about 1/8 inch. Strange it does not go back in. Maybe the mechanism inside is broken. Did the other passenger side caliper piston go back in nicely?

Maybe it's already all the way in?

i just did this, and had a similar problem. mine was so tight i actually broke the "special" tool from autozone. it doesn't take much rotation, just a lot of force. because i didn't have a spare car, i had to reassemble it several times during the job, and i think this may have loosened the piston as i was able to get it with needle-nose pliars in the end. try reassembling and pumping your brakes, then starting over... just a thought

I did mine with the special tool and it was a pain. But I had help from my brother. In the end,the calipers went bad and my rotors started smokin.Had to then change everything. It's pretty cheap to just get new calipers from Autozone.I only paid $77 after core for each.

I used a C clamp at first because I thought it was like other calipers and would just "push" back in

Then of course I had an epiphany and thought what if it turned back like some others? Of course this was the solution, a pair of channel locks and 2 min later had reset the calipers. If it is sticking you might disconnect the brake fluid line to take any pressure out.

Instead of disconnecting the brake line, open the bleeder plug. Be prepared to have a helper for bleeding the brakes after that.

i had this same problem. I changed my brakes with my best friend and his father and we were baffled for about 2 hours. What a pain in the ***. What we did was take the piston out and clean everything up, regreased it, and it went back in fairly easily. Give that a shot, it worked for me

you can take the piston out? one of my rear caliper was seized up and it took every once of strength I had to turn it back in with some vise-grips. The seal was destroyed before so I'd have to replace it. I was planing on just getting a whole new caliper for autozone, but maybe i don't have to. Can i just regrease the piston and get a new seal? BTW, the caliper is working just fine right now, only problem is since it was seized up before, the brake pad wore down unevenly and began to destroy the inside of the rotor so I get a real loud grinding sound when braking.

Good work!

Well regular needle nose pliers work well for them, turning clockwise to push the piston in. Autozone also rents the special tool for free

AUTOZONE says that it's only on rear brakes. Just making sure is that right?

While doing an I30's brakes not too long ago, one of the rear pistons was so seized, the only way I could break it loose was to put the tool onto an 1/2" to 3/8" adapter, and use my impact gun.
