has anyone replaced the stock unit with the lighter one? or is this mod for manual tranny only? im confused. how much can i buy a flywheel for and what kind of gains if any..thanks

we auto uses torque converter and some kind of plate?
I was asking this question way back then....I did not know
how the A/T and M/T works then...(still no better now...)

It is for 5-speeds only. The automatic transmission does not have a true flywheel.

so it AT doesn't have a "true flywheel", then the question becomes:
Is there a lightweight upgrade for the "fake flywheel" that the AT uses?

The "fake flywheel" is called a flex plate or drive plate. On most cars it is made of stamped steel sheet metal. If you held it in your hands you might say "Gosh, there really isn't any way to make this lighter than it already is!"

it is for 5 spd only...and i have changed UR lightened flywheel(5 lbs.) and it supposed to give you about 8-10 HP while stillen one gives you about 6-8HP (stillen one is about 10-13 lbs.)

Be careful about quoting "8 - 10 HP". A light flywheel does not cause the engine to generate any more or less power. It may improve performance because the engine has less work to do in the process of propelling the car 1/4 mile down a drag strip.

If you toss out the spare tire and back seat to lighten the car, the car will accelerate faster but not because the engine has more power.

Saving a pound of rotating mass (such as a lighter flywheel or lighter road wheels) has a more beneficial effect than saving a pound of dead weight (such as the spare tire)... but it is the same general principle.

Oh...i am sorry for saying it gains HP. I know the theory. but i was gonna say it feels like it...

Daniel is correct. Autos do NOT have a flywheel in the traditional sense. Yes they have a thin steel plate that has a ring gear on the outside. But the only function of this is to have something for the starter ring gear to engage when you start the car! That's it. Nada, nothing as in no other function. I believe autos have a torque convertor that replaces the flywheel function.
